Lots of discussion lately with regard to which short 6.5 is the best.I think if Remington would have gone to a more Ackley type shoulder angle alot of the differences would be more of choice than performance.Case capacity would have a small increase which would overlap most of the edge by the Creedmore/6.5x47 or 6.5x 284.
I am presently preparing to rebarrel my Rem 700 ADL in 243 to probably a standard 260.This is strickly going to be a lighter weight deer rifle and most deer sized game at 200 yds aren't going to know if they were dropped by a Creedmore/6.5x47 or 6.5x284 !!! I have both P.O Ackley volumes of wildcat cartridges--in most cases[not all] the smaller cases show more ballistic performance with strait case walls and sharper shoulder angles verses larger ones.Best example 257 Roberts improved verses 30/06 Imp.
This shooting sport we all love would be a boring endeavor if it weren't for our many differences of opinions and preferences. So this is only my take on the subject and I will enjoy anyone else's comments!!

Fleming if all I wanted was a 200 yarder I would be looking at the 338 Federal although it would be good to 4 or 500 yrds it would be a short action, brush bucking bullet with loads of energy because bear season is open at the same time deer season is out here.

Yep Dober you are right the 243 will do the job out to 200yds,I only gave that figure because if the truth was known most guys only make that 3-4 or 5oo yd shot once in awhile.I have hunted the open plains of Nebraska for 35 yrs bagging whitetails and muleys with only about 5 or 6 shots over 300yds which was with my 264 Win mag.
The reason for my post was "I ain't gettin any younger"and I still love the 6.5 bore,so a short action rifle would be much easier for these old bones to carry around!!!
The transition over from 243 to 260 would be painless as compared to the other 6.5 rounds I previously mentioned-- plus my stockpile of the same compoments is another advantage.
Thanks for your input--Flem

Good choice for an upclose and personal hammer--I have one also for the same reason except for hog hunting. It still can't be beat after all these years. Many law enforcement agencies out here are going back to it because of its stopping power verses a 9mm.

Mooosemunch--I agree with your choice just wondered if you have a 260 and if so what length pipe.I think to keep the weight down on my rebarrel job I will go with a 24"medium taper
and 1-8 or 1-9 twist.Sound OK to you?..

My .260AI sports a 22" bbl. and shoots well out to 500 yds. with Berger 130VLD hunting bullets. This in a Rem. 700 mountain rifle configuration has accounted for many a deer, antelope and feral hog.

Dober, forgot to tell you in my reply that another reason for rebarreling my 243 to 260 was because I have this sweet Ruger #1 in 6mm. What a one holer and excellent deer/ antelope cartridge with 100gr pills. So why do I need a 260 when I have this, well my only response is the 260 will be a bit easier on the gun-bearer!!! A scoped #1 is a fairly hefty shootin iron!!!

I do have one, or I should my daughter does. It has a 23" tube, #2 hart. I replaced bolt shroud with a PTG unit and in an Edge stock it goes 6 pounds 2 ounces. I'd run an 8 and have twice.

+1 for the 260rem. Easy on the shoulder and hard on the game. One of the most under rated little cartridges going...unless of course you shoot one and generally puff the chest out in knowing how sweet it really is smile

260 Rem....or the 260 Ack Imp....

The Ack Imp will feed better from a center feed mag...

Although mine is a s/shot solid bottom Savage 12 action...

8 twist is the way to go.....

I like a 260. I shot a whitetail doe with my little carbon barreled rifle at 200 yards last year. It did a great job, dropped it right there with a hit through the liver. It was running shot and I hit just a touch back from where I wanted to but the 130g AB did massive damage and exited the other side.

I see no reason to go to the 140 AB because it doesn't have much higher BC and the 130 seems plenty for deer. They shoot 1/2 moa in my carbon gun over a stiff load of H4350. They're clocking almost 2900 fps at the muzzle.
