Sometime back on this forum a fellow was talking about a knife a Kansas cattleman had made him, for a cool 60 bucks. Said he had skinned and boned 3 elk and it still held a fine edge.
I always had a soft spot for American cattlemen, so I finally got around to ordering one. Real nice guy to talk to - has a small machine shop at his ranch and says he's been making knives for hobby since after WWII. Uses tungsten steel for the blades.
I posted a picture of it. I am real pleased with the knife for the money. You can shave with the blade on it. If it holds an edge like the other fellow said, I will be delighted. The blade is about 4 & 3/4" long and what I like is the fairly narrow 1/16" blade for boning meat in the field. Deer antler handle and a good quality leather sheath. A real nice all around hunting knife for the $60 + $5 shipping price.
If you are interested, tell him you read about him on 24 Hour Campfire. His name is Elmer J. Smith, 4250 CR #4315, Independence, KS 67301. His phone is 620-331-5211.
Troberto. I'm the one that posted the original info. I have always offerd to buy any knife that someone buys from him if they are dissatisfied. I have never had to do that.
If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles
You guys are right on. I had the same thought on that sheath Spotshooter, 'cause that blade is wicked sharp.
Like I said, he's a heckuva nice guy, and he does say he will refund your money gladly if not satisfied with the knife (not likely). They do make a nice gift. I picked up a couple extra for my brother and hunting buddy.
BTW, he's 71 years old, and at the rate he sounds like he goes (15 mile trapline this winter, and now cattle to move this spring), he'll probably only be around another 25 or 30 years. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
E.J. "Junior" Smith lives about 10 miles south of my parents. My sisters and I got one for my dad for fathers day about 12 years ago, looks very similar to the one you purchased, and yes, wickedly sharp. An interesting note on the rising prices, we paid 35 bucks for his 12 years ago.
