I have heard about updating a 30/06 pre64 Model 70 to 300H&H.
I am somewhat familiar with the bolt updates, but was wondering in the magazine area.
I saw that Wyatt sells a model 70 magazine box that is extended in length over the original. I suspect that the ejector and bolt stop would be touched, but mainly wondering on where in general is the machining done on the receiver for the new longer box.
Is the machining in front or to the rear of the receiver area for a longer magazine box? Does it really matter?
If in the rear, does the new flat milled area extend into the screw hole? I have observed one rifle modded for 300 Win Mag, and the magazine was about 3.7" and the receiver was modded in the front. For the 300 H&H application, are the scallops on the top of the receiver, front/rear really necessary for ejecting a spent case?
Not looking for heavy specifics, felt that was too much to ask, but wondered if someone could describe the mod in just general terms.
thanks...

I have a 300 H&H that began as a 30-06, but it is based on a Classic, and not a pre-64. It has not had the port lengthened, and ejects loaded cases just fine. It does have the standard magazine, with the filler removed. So it requires no modifications to the action for the box. The boltstop and ejector have been modified. The extractor needs to be changed.

The receiver is cut in the front, shortening the feed ramp. The front bridge cut is for ejecting loaded rounds.

And even the original extractor can be slightly modified to accept the H&H round.. I've done bunches..

I appreciate everyone's time. It is good to hear others' experiences.
I now have pre and post 64 model 70's in hand now; both 30-06's; with the post64 as a push feed, so perhaps the hints will soak in some with some time looking over things in hand for a 300 H&H project on a Winchester 70 of some sort.
I have thought about waiting and trying to buy a 7mmRemMag on a late model as the donor, but have not got there yet on decisons.
thanks,

Buy a late model classic that came in 7mm STW or 300 Weatherby (or 375 H&H but they're pricey). All the parts will already be correct and all you'll need is a new barrel in 300 H&H. This one on gunsamerica would be perfect, but it's already sold http://www.gunsamerica.com/95891816...hester_Model_70_Classic_Sport_7mm_ST.htm

What he said.. Saves time, cost, etc.. In fact, I usually keep a STW or two around, just in case the issue comes up and a rifle is needed for a customer of mine.. The 7mm Mag can be modified to work.. It just takes a bit more work, time, parts and money..
