I know this has been mentioned a couple times, but can't find the thread. About what time did the high lustre blue on the recievers change to a duller blue? Thanks for any replies.

I dont know when it changed the first time but Rick and I talked about this some time back and he said that around 1928 it seemed that Savage used the high luster for a second time and was back to the duller blue by the mid 30s.

The 22 pumps lost their lustre after WW I. Don't know if the same happened to the 99 but I have an early E without the hi lustre finish.

I always just used the 200,000 serial mark... there are obviously exceptions... all the K's for the most part have the high luster well into the 300,000s

Savage dropped the "high luster" or "bright blue" when production started after WWI, some place between 193,000 and 200,000.

They used it again mostly in 1927 and 1928,in the 301000 to 316000 range. I don't think it was on all models/production. It is hard to tell on rifle that have been used a lot.

BillR may have more data on the subject than I do.
