I know a 223 is small but if all you had was a 223 loaded with full metal jacket bullets, do you think you could stop a big brown bear before being mauled?

That's what I'd do. I sure wouldn't look at it and not use it.

This guy killed one with a 45. Didn't the Indians kill them with arrows?

your only real hope would be a CNS shot.

Some folks, including me, and a lot of states, don't think that the .223 is large enough for whitetail deer. But I would use a .22 derringer, if that was all that I had. I guess my question is why would one be carrying a .223 in Brown Bear country? As to the being mauled part, I would say 40-60%, and you pick.

Yes. If a 5.56 FMJ can kill a water buffalo, and it can (please don't ask), it can kill a grizzly.

I thought Virgil (or at least one of) the Umphenours used a Mini-14 as backup for Griz. I don't remember if I saw it somewhere or just what.

The .223 wouldn't be my first choice but I've no doubt that if the .222 Rem can do it so can the .223. My FIL and his brother took several big Brown Bear with a .222 Rem many moons ago.

I'd damn sure rather a .223 than a .44mag.

Agreed. And I would like a shotgun filled with alternating slugs and 000 buckshot better yet.

Wasn't a polar bear killed with a 223 at an inland village in Alaska recently?

Bruce

Found it:
http://www.adn.com/2008/03/31/v-printer/358614/march-28-wayward-polar-bear-shot.html

Two hunters caught up with the animal outside of town on the Porcupine River and one of them shot it with an AR-15 after it came out of a brush pile and charged him. I shot from the hip, seven or eight times, said Zeb Cadzow. If I had gotten it to my shoulder, it would have been on top of me.
