I have a Savage Model 99 in .300 caliber. I can find no series letter on it anywhere except on the left side of the barrel (close to the receiver) I do see a "W". Is this the letter designation for my rifle? I was thinking it was an "E" or something else. I see no lettering behind the but stock pad, nor on the ring of the lever, nor any place else. The forearm of the stock doesn't see to want to come off. The screw is really in there tight and not wanting to bugger anything up I have not removed it to look for a letter thereunder. Anyone know if W was a letter designation for this rifle?

Still haven't found a letter on my Model 99 but I did find a picture of one that looks exactly like mine. It looks like I have a Model 99 E in .300 caliber. The stock on this rifle and in the photo I saw of one like mine are stained a light honey color and have checkering on both the fore end and the but stock.

Does it have a lever safety and a rotary clip? If so...probably an E made sometime after 1960. Post the serial # with the last 2 digits x out and somebody here can tell you the year it was made.

Welcome to the forum, RoadRash. Odd name tho.. W wasn't a model, if it's a light yellow/tan then it'll probably be a 99E. They had a range with that finish. Though most of the 99E's did say 99E on the receiver. Any chance you can post a pic?

Here is the serial number on my .300 Savage Model 99: 6844XX. Stamped on the barrel is "(sp)" and below that near the stock is "W". The rifle does have a lever & lever safety and it has a rotary clip.
If anyone knows what I have I'd love to know. The stock is a light yellow color (honey I'd call it). Sorry, I am not too swift about putting pictures on a forum.

Most likely an EG, not an E.

I'd wager it's got a rotary magazine...not a rotary clip.

Look under the "sticky" at the top of the Savage forum page, then look for instructions for Photobucket to post pictures. If you can remove the forearm, and the buttplate, there should be serial numbers on the back of the forearm, the buttstock under the buttplate back of the buttplate...all threee should match if original.

That sounds like a birch wood stock!?! RoadRash... is there a LETTER in front of that serial number like " C6844xx"????? If so, then it's may be that your rifle was made in 1978. Strength & Honor...
