I recently bought a Leupold VXII 1-4 variable for my 9.3. I noticed now after being sighted in and used to work up loads that as I look through the scope while dry firing I can visibly see the cross hairs move during the dry firing process. I thought this odd, so I checked the tightness of rings and tried twisting the scope in the rings and everything is tight. I thought I was imagining it so compared it to other non Leupold scopes and crosshairs are stationary during the same dry firing process. What is going on? I haven't taken to the range to see if the POI is moving around yet but I certainly will. Any ideas?

Do you have a collimator or other optical bore sighter? If so, try working the adjustments to see if they move the appropriate distance and do so smoothly. That should tell you whether the reticle is loose or not without having to burn up any ammo.

It is a variable scope--the crosshairs' position is variable. I'll bet you are sending that one in. Just don't waste too much ammo before you do.

No boresighter, but didn't think of that. I'll fire a couple of the pet loads to see, but I think you're right Utah that the scope is going back. Bummer too, but Leupold will make it right. Thanks for the suggestions.

Send it back. You shouldn't see anything move during a dryfire.

If one has another free standing scope available, snugly attach it with masking tape to ones mounted unit and repeat the exercise. If one has movement in one and not the other then he likely has issues.
