Slo,
Blue Book shows the 670 was a spin off of the model 70 made between 1967 and 1970. Sounds like yours is the carbine style -19" barrel. If it has "great checkering" as you described, that was most likely done after the purchase, as these were manufactured as economy versions of the M70.
I won't quote a price as the book is dated and the condition and any additions to the firearm can effect price.
Frankly, if my father gave it to me, I'd most likely keep it as a momento. Hope this helps. BT53

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. If you do a web search for "Winchester Manufacture Dates" you come across an excellent site that can date your winchester firearms... The 670 seems to be left out, presumably due to the low volume and narrow time span (3/4 years). BT53

BT53 Is it possible that the 670 serial #s fall under the M70 dates? My M64 is listed in the the M94 dates.

I had a 670 in 30/06. Bought it for 150 from a neighbor. What a steal. Only thing I didn't like at that time was finding a stock. Everything I knew of was for a 70 with hinged floor, and this was blind mag. Had the local smith twist on a 25-06 take off barrel and a bell and carlson stock and procede to shoot 1/2" groups with her. I don't think they have a high value or demand, and if you do anything I would convert to a hinged floor plate. A lot easier to find cheaper stocks, unless you get a mickey for the ecact action.

Basically another push feed 70 procuced to save a few buck on options. Like most of the Win Ranger stuff. Usually hardwood stocks and short on bells and whistles.

I have owned two 670's in 30-06 with 22" barrels, they both shot extremely well for a big game rifle. As mentioned before, they come with a blind magazine and a stained hardwood stock. Both of mine had impressed, rather than cut checkering.

I am by no means a collector and am not familiar with book value, but I would pay $150 to $200 for another one of these rifles if I had a need for a 30-06 game rifle. I sold the last 670 I owned to a coworker for $200.

284LUVR,
Yeah, I wondered about that too and did the search. It came up with 1950 as the manufacture date. That put it 17 years before the 670 production started, so I guess they didn't bury them there.
Regardless, it's a fine rifle and can either be enjoyed as is or as a platform to build into something else.

They put out a cheaper version of the std model 70. This is what you have, Usually the finish was not as good, and the stcok was cheaper. Same basic action though

there was a 670 & a 770, I've got my thumb on a 770 in 300 win mag. The 770 is a walnut stock with a raised cheek piece but still has blind magazine. Push feed bolt, checkering looks pressed or poorly cut. These are like stated above model 70's with the bells & whistles taken away. late 60's early 70's, kind of neat, good actions, accurate, dependable.

Something clever here.

Don't tell anyone, but these Model 670s are a good way to get a Model 70 action CHEAP. The action, I believe is in no way inferior to the Model 70 push feed action, except for finish.
I just picked up a 670 for $170 that will probably be rebarrelled to something. I like the triggers on them.

The one I bought brand new from K-Mart back in 1978 has served me well. I don't know exactly when it was made, but it is an accurate cuss for an off-the-rack rifle (.75" MOA w/factory ammo). Mine's a 22" barreled .30-06; I think they also came in .270. The rifle is not as slick as some of the higher priced bolt actions out there, but it gets the job done.

I've owned the gun since I was 19, and I doubt that I will ever get rid of it due to its performance and sentimental value. Yes, I am one of those (seemingly) rare birds--the one gun hunter. Although I have tried to justify buying another big-game rifle in another caliber, I honsetly can't objectively come up with a good reason to do so. The ol' '06 is just too good of a utilitarian tool (especially with handloading) to be replaced.

An 18" barrel seems kind of short for a .30-06 hunting rifle, but I am sure it has its purpose. Was this done at the factory or aftermarket?

One thing I remember when I bought the rifle was the salesman saying that the 670 was the cheaper (economy) version of the model 70. Luckily for me, the accuracy doesn't seem to suffer from the lower-grade wood, impressed checkering, and less-than-slick action, all of which could be remedied if I ever feel like spending the cash, but I doubt that I ever will. As plain-Jane as the gun is, I hope to pass it on someday to my son, regardless of whether or not he turns out to be a hunter (at 4, I'm not quite sure yet about him, although he seems to like guns).

If nothing else, try the gun out to see how it performs. You might be pleasantly surprised.
DAL

P.S. Not that I've used them since the late '70s, but I like the fact the gun has iron sights. BTW, the gun wasn't drilled and tapped for a scope when I bought it, nor did it have swivels. After one season of constantly carrying the rifle in my hands, you can bet I promptly had swivels installed.

God's gift to the hunting world: The .30-06.
