It's a start, anyways. Big game season yet to come. A couple of wigeons, a canada goose and a happy dog. This was a 440yd cold bore shot I knew I could deliver, and I did. Two dead raccoon dogs = relief for a whole lot of game birds.

Sako TRG-S ( the 90's 338LM sized action ) in 30-06. I've got two optional configurations for it: - The TRG-41 chassis and stock, TRG-42 DBM and trigger group. - The original TRG-S stock, DBM and trigger. ( click for larger pictures ) On top is a Zeiss Victory Diavari 3-12x56 lit mildot with custom BDC. I have customized the turret for "S&B dual turn" - like use, giving me 12mrad+ of useful elevation with Sako Optilocks that are also customized ( front ring turned in lathe for some 20ish MOA cant, then the rings and bases were TIG welded together ) ( the black markings are for 2 m/s wind correction at given range, shown in yellow ) I think this is the most flexible rifle optic I have owned. It's easily good from point blank range all the way to 1100yd+ on my 30-06. The suppressor is Ase Utra Northstar. Recoil drops to half and I don't have to wear any hearing protection, plus it helps with accuracy ( the best three-shot groups for this gun measure in the ones ) .

That is one slick rig.
Did you do the work on the scope rings yourself?

My trusted gunsmith turned the ring and my father, who runs a one-man industry machine business, did the welds.
Now that I look at it, the specs make it sound awfully tacticool but it's rather low profile, really. Most of the long range capability is in the optics and I believe this is one of Zeiss's finest.

I had never heard of a raccoon dog before. Thanks for the information and education on them.

Ruistola. Very interesting thanks for sharing. Never heard of the raccoon dog. Do you hunt capercaillie in Finland. I lived and worked in Russia in the early 1990's and did a lot of hunting for the capercaillie there. Neat bird to hunt
Did some fishing in Finland. Great country and people

Yes we hunt capercaillie but they, along with the willow grouse, are the rarest of the grouse family so the typical big capercaillie male has eluded me so far. We do hunt lots of black grouse, though.

I am another reader who was not familiar with the raccoon dog. It is amazing what we learn here on the campfire.
Thanks, Jim

That head shape on the coon/dogs... sure looks more like a standard coon head, rather than any dog.... maybe close to a fox...
I did read wiki... learned something today for sure.

I love reading the "Europe" threads. I always learn so many new things. I really enjoyed this thread, the links, and the photos. Thanks again, I hope to read more. Regards, Brian

Interesting never heard of Raccoon Dog, now I have. 440 yards well is not like the Finns can't shoot, Lots of Russians (Soviets) would vouch for that little fact.
