I hunt more with my .270 than any of my other rifles. Lots of discussion about .270 and its limits everywhere. What are your favorite .270 loads and what do you use them for? (Or, what would you use?)
Here are mine (usual safety comments apply work up to charge, check for pressure, use at own risk, etc.).
Factory- Federal 130 hi-shok- deer Federal premium 150 partition- mule deer, elk
Handloads- 150 partition, 58 gr H4831- elk, mule deer
140 interlock, 59 gr H4831- mule deer, pronghorn, sheep
100 gr Hornady, 25 gr IMR 4227- water filled milk jugs at 1-200 yds (FUN field practice!!!)
and, please vote for my picture of my Bighorn Sheep taken with my .270 at this link
I have used so many different loads of a plethra of componant combinations, it is impossible to list them here.
Nowadays, I don't hunt much with the 270 but I shoot it some. I mostly shoot 130gr Core Lokts over whatever powder I have on hand that is in the H4831 burning range whether it is H4831, IMR 4831, Reloader 22, IMR 7828. Whatever it is still accurate and cheap to shoot.
I still have some old hunting ammo loaded that I loaded up some 15 years ago. The first is 130gr Partitions over 60grs H4831 and the other is 150gr Partitions over 58grs H4831.
I did take the 270 out hunting Elk one day this winter as I had a late cow tag here in SE Idaho. The winter didn't cooperate this year and the elk didn't get pushed down. I found a sale on some remington factory loads with a 140gr Ulta core Lokt. They shoot under an inch so I carried them. I never saw an elk.
My 270 (By the way it is a Reminton Classic m700) has had over 2500 rounds through it so it is retired. It still shoots good. Now and then I take it out and go bust some rocks or water jugs to remind myself of a time in my youth when that 270 was a near and dear friend and faithful companion. I think it will see a rockchuck shoot this spring. One should never really retire any gun.
WW brass, CCI LRG primers, 54.5-55.0 grs IMR-4350, 130 gr Nosler Partitions. Deer is all I've hunted, wouldn't have any heart burn shooting an elk with it, but would prefer the 150 gr for that.
What's my cut if I vote for your pic??
Combineman, impressive that rifle is still going strong at 2500 shots... sounds like some of your load prefs run somewhat similar to mine
ready on... well, aside from my thanks and the satisfaction of seeing your vote count, how about I'll give you a vote if you're in the contest next yr
My favorite .270 load was your 59gr H4831 load with the 140gr Hornady. I used it on Whitetails and one Elk (spike) with great success. DRT kills on all of them. Averaged .65", and 3076 fps. Shoulda kept that rifle...

My pet load for deer and similar game for many years has been the Nosler 130 Partition chased by 59/60 grains of Norma MRP, depending on the rifle. For bigger stuff, I used 58 grains of the same under the 150 Partition. Never had a 270 that wouldn't shoot close to an inch with these recipes. [some did better!] regards, Eagleye.

I've only had a 270 for a couple of years. I started with MagPro powder and it shoots Barnes TSX, Sierra GameKing's, and Hornady SST 130's great! With MagPro each of these bullets have shot under and inch and give me around 3200 fps at 64 to 64.5 grains of powder. I've got two one hole groups with the Sierra's. I haven't shot it much but like what I see so far.

WW cases, Rem 9 1/2 primers and 55gr of IMR4350 pushing the Hornaday 130 spire point. Lot's of blacktail, a few mule deer, a mt goat, a dozen or so coyotes and a whole truck load of ground squirrels. The only rifle I owned for about 8 years! Shoots pretty little moa groups for 5 shots at a hundred. BT53

Although I don't use the .270 Winchester, this is the load I make for three of my friends who do. They use it on whitetail deer, mule deer and antelope.
Bullet: Sierra 140 Grain Hollow Point Boat Tail Powder: 53.1 grains of IMR-4350 Primer: Winchester WLR Case: Winchester Firearms: 3 different pre-64 Winchester 70's Velocities: From 2916 FPS to 2944 FPS @ 15' from muzzle, depending on firearm
lots of interesting loads to try here, I may well try the 4350s for yucks when I get to the bottom of my H4831 can
btw, ricciardelli, you've got a great reloading webpage, I have referred to it many times to get charge ranges, it's the most comprehensive load data source I know of on the web
Thanks to any of you who voted for my sheep picture in the contest as well...
I'm a huge .270 fan. I hardly ever stick to one load for a given purpose since I tinker all the time, but my favorite all time load is 56-58 grains of H-4831 (standard or sc) depending on brass, CCI-250 primers, and a 150 gr Hornady Spire Point. By favorite load, I mean consistently accurate across several .270s while producing characteristic velocities. I'm also a big fan of the 140 Hornady BTSP in either handloaded form (similar recipe as 150s, but 1 more grain of H-4831) or Hornady light mag factory loads. I also really like IMR-4831 in the .270.
I've had the same .270 since 1967. My favorite load is 60 gr. H4831 and 130 gr. bullet. I've killed deer, antelope, goat and elk with that load. Oh yeah, and one feral cat. The only other load I've used is 90 gr hollowpoints for jackrabbits. I recently loaded some 110 gr. v-max but, haven't used them on anything yet.
I've had the good fortune to have been shooting the same 270 for 48 years. For deer the 130 grain bullets from Hornady Speer and Remington have done pretty good as well as the 135 Sierra MK for Hunter Rifle Silhouette.Powders have usually been the slow burners but IMR4064 and H4895 work pretty good as well.Last fall I tried some 160 grain Partitions over 49.5 gr. of IMR4350 and it is by far the most accurate load I have ever used in that gun.
The load I use in my .270 Win. is 56 grs. of Rldr-22, a Fed GM-210 M match primer and 150 Gr. Partitions. The bullet is seated to 2.823" to the ogive, about 0.010" off the lands I think. This combination will give me 2885 fps on the chrono and 1" groups or slightly less and is my "go to" rifle for sheep & caribou. I've never obtained the consistant accuracy I desire using the more commonly used powders for this round - ie., the 4831's & 4350's. I keep hearing about temperature changes affecting velocity but I couldn't comment on that. I have always found that Partitions are not as accurate as some other bullets but I've always been a fan of premium bullets for hunting. I've found good, consistant accuracy with Northforks in my .338 and intend to try the 150 gr. Northfork for this rifle. For me, I guess that about sums things up. HTH some. Bear in Fairbanks

My favorite load for the 270-130 grain bullet is 49.5 gr of 4064. Got this load out of one of Jack Oconnors books. Was one of his favorites for the 270. Shoots great in two of mine, a pre 64 70 and a Parker-Hale mauser. The winchester also likes 63 gr. of h-4831 with the 90 gr. sierra. Great varmint buster!
