Hey Guys, I am getting a 30-06 rechambered to Ackley. Instead of having to purchase a set of dies cut to ackley, cant I just use a next sizing die for the standard 30-06 set to the proper clearance? All brass will only be used in the one rifle.
Thanks Bill

WMWISE: NO ! You're swimming in troubled waters with your headspace. Remember it's your face, your eyes that are inches away from a pipe bomb that can generate 60,000 psi. No shortcuts. Do it right. It's worth it. If you haven't as yet sent your rifle out you may want to reconsider Fred Zeglins .30-06 chambering which is about 5% better than Ackleys. If you are rechambering you apparently are looking for improvement. Rather than get about 5% why not go for 9% better performance. Fred also has his own dies. http://www.z-hat.com/Bill Tibbe

If you run an improved case into a standard neck die, you will resize the case body and probably ruin the new shoulder. Remember with an Ackley Improved you remove some of the case taper, move the shoulder forward and change the neck angle. So if you tried that , you would no longer have an improved case.Rick.

Bill,
It is my humbled opinion that rechambering a 22" barrel for an A.I. version is an exercise in futility. You don't state how long your barrel is but a 22" wouldn't be likely to net you more that 50 f.p.s. Which for all practical purposes means absolutely nothing. If you want more "juice" you need at least a 24" barrel. Even then you likely wouldn't get a lot more than 100 f.p.s. It's your rifle! If you must take shortcuts, the Hornady Neck sizing die will work (30 Cal long). It is universal and will fit 300 Mag/30-06.. so will work for the 30-06AI. However, you still will need to use something to seat the bullets. Do yourself a favor and buy the Redding 30-06 FL die set... worth the money and saves a lot of hassle and variables to worry about.

Do yourself a BIG favor...get the proper tool for the job.
And as an aside, even P.O. said that "improving" 30 caliber and up was a waste of time and money.

ricciardelli, Where did Ackley claim that improving 30cal & up was a waste?

Yeah me too. I know he thought the 30-06 as the 7 Mauser A.I.'s were far more useful than the magnums in these calibers. I'd shoot an A.I.'d cartridge anyday over any of the moose juicers. Then again I'm more into efficiency rather than speed anyway. A properly loaded 338-06 A.I. will do anything, within reason, that the vaunted Win Mag will do. Taking into account bbl. length and real world ballistics.
