I recently picked up an ancient sporterized mauser with a nice Weaver K4 with a post reticle. I want to mount the scope on my 99Savage. The problem is the Buehler rings. The head of the screw on top of the front ring is stripped. I've gone through my box of driver tips and haven't found one that won't slip. I hesitate to drill out the screw, because that would damage/destroy the ring, then I'm on the hunt for another set of Buehler rings or redrill for a weaver mount. The Mauser is a nice 257Roberts built on a 1915 Erfurt Mauser with a maple stock.
So....off to the gunsmith to have him attempt to remove?
Keep the current set up and hunt the 257bob?
Blacktail Season starts at the end of the month.

I'd keep the set-up, as is. It is a very classic look. And there are other Weavers out there for the Savage.....

YMMV

I believe one of the bits used to remove a screw with a stripped head (standard, phillips, hex, torque) would back it out of there without damaging the ring. Soak the threads with Kroil for 24 hours (or longer to allow penetration) before using the bit.

The front ring has a screw on top and on the bottom. Remove the scope altogether and then you can access the bottom screw on the front ring and loosen it. That should take off enough tension to back out the top screw. Remember that the front base has a screw that needs to be backed out to remove the scope ring from the base.

I bow to the wisdom of experience.

I did remove the scope with the front ring and removed the bottom screw on the ring. I hosed the screw down with WD40, and will source Kroil this week...

The only other thing I can think of is to apply heat with the tip of a soldering gun to see if that ill break it free. Frankly, I probably would be heading for a local gunsmith who can remove it with an EZ-OUT bit.

I found a bushnell banner 4x with a post reticle for $25. So I'll put the Weaver back on the Mauser!
