Would someone be kind enough to run this in Quickload for me?

Remington 7600 18.5 inch barrel
30-06 Sprng.

RP Brass, CCI 200 primers, 49 grains IMR 4895, 165 grain hornady BTSP. OAL to bullet tip (3.28 inches).

I know IMR 4895 is not the "best" for 165 grainers in the 30-06 but my rifle loves this combination. Was curious what Quickload says in terms of pressure, etc.

Thanks a lot!

Using the defaults, QuickLOAD thinks you should be good to about 53.0g of IMR 4895. Pressure at 49g is estimated at 47K PSI.

Code
Cartridge : .30-06 Spring. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 165, Hornady BTSP 3045
Useable Case Capaci: 61.410 grain H2O = 3.987 cm
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.280 inch = 83.31 mm
Barrel Length : 18.5 inch = 469.9 mm
Powder : IMR 4895

Note: That 53.0g is likely an estimate for a strong bolt action. I've never loaded for a 7600 but it is probably wise to keep the pressures lower.

Azar, I have QL but have never used the function you showed. Where do I find it on the software?

it's on the toolbar on top of the main QL page, a little more than half way from the left.

?????

Yours must be different from mine, toad. That's one of the QuickLOAD functions that I use most, and it's seventh from the right on my QuickLOAD tool bar far past half-way along from the left.

IMHO, it's one of the most useful of all the QuickLOAD functions. It tells which powder[s] will give you the best muzzle velocities at or below the maximum peak pressure and the range of case fill (%) that you've specified.

Look close, fremont the icon is a white rectangle with the numbers 1, 2, and 3 down the left side of a stack of three "bullets" (1 , 2 , 3 ).

On the preliminary screen, I set the maximum desired pressure at 50,000 lb/sq in. and the case fill at 100%. I don't like to compress the powder or to leave too much air space, so I set the case fill to a minimum of 90% and a maximum of 100%. Then I select the "both of the above" option.

The read-out that I get is a bit misleading it warns that some loads are hot, when they're only pushing the maximum-pressure limit that you've set (not necessarily that they're dangerously high for your rifle). If, for example, you set your maximum desired peak pressure at, say, 20,000 lb/sq in., QuickLOAD will warn you that every load that reaches or pushes 20,000 lb/sq in. is "dangerously high," even though the SAAMI limit for that cartridge may well be 60,000 lb/sq in. or even higher.

Ken, you are correct. i was going from memory because i had QL closed right then.

i should know better by now...

Aaaah, memory!

I sorta remember having one of those, years ago, but can't remember what I used it for. grin

Be sure to study this excellent review of QuickLOAD over and over and over

http://www.6mmbr.com/Quickload.html

There's a lot more in that program than you'll find (or even suspect) just by looking at it and using it on your own. You won't believe how fast careless or hasty use of it can get you into trouble

trouble that (like debt and snowbanks) is easier to get into than out of!

Actually, the function I showed would be the eighth from the right on the button bar. It wasn't the list of powder rankings which I posted but the graph showing velocity and pressure at specific increments of a particular powder.

I do love the feature that Ken is talking about though and what's nice is that you can re-order the list by criteria other than muzzle velocity (such as case fill, percentage of propellant burned, etc). The second most useful for me, has been the graph I posted that tells you the estimated pressure & velocity at specific charges.

Would it be possible for you to determine the most efficient powder for me to use given the specs in my first post? If it is too much hassle I understand. I am fascinated by this QL software!

Well, what is your criteria for "most efficient powder"? Percentage of propellant burned? Most velocity per grain of powder? Highest velocity overall...?

I am not getting get great velocity out of my 18.5 inch barrel so I guess overall velocity would be most important to me.

It predicts that Reloder-17 will give you top velocity, but only about 37 fps greater than what can be achieved with IMR 4895 in that application. Of course, this is only a computer estimation. Your real-world results may vary.

Code
Cartridge : .30-06 Spring. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 165, Hornady BTSP 3045
Useable Case Capaci: 61.523 grain H2O = 3.995 cm
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.280 inch = 83.31 mm
Barrel Length : 18.5 inch = 469.9 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 57500 psi, or 396 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 105 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

Another interesting note, 58 grain imr 4350 runs about 2650 fps in this rifle. Very close to what Quickload predicts.

Soon after I got my first version of QuickLOAD, a friend asked me to see what it said about his favorite loads in two cartridges (which he'd shot a lot and had chronographed). He was especially interested in seeing what QuickLOAD would say that their pressures were. The loads shot well, but he was worried that maybe their pressures were excessive.

QuickLOAD got the muzzle velocity for one load eerily close, and the other one right smack on.

And their pressures were mild.

It seems like a great program, Ken. I hope to get it one of these days.
