Like to hear from 284 guys, what can you tell me?

What brass you running, barrel info inc. length and performance.

Accuracy? Ease of loading? Powders? Feeding w/o mods? BBL Life?

Anything you want to share, love to hear it. Seems like it has potential for a 7mm non mag SA round.

So you know, despite being a big 7/08 fan here, but have a curiosity in the 284 for Range work only - not hunting (for shooting 600-1000), so a build would be a heavy bbl for Paper and Steel, basically a fun gun. Seems milder than a WSM.

That was the question I did not inc., whether a short action will deliver potential, as some 6.5-284, 284, and 7 WSMs are done on long actions for target shooters to max powder space for 180s or similar heavies.

Assuming a sucks action:

WW brass, H4350, RL19, etc., 1-9 twist for the heavies, use a LA-might have to change followers. Accuracy has been good.

You didn't ask so I won't suggest a 6.5-284. smile

WElllllllllll, I Love 6.5s, but bore life for me becomes in the 'expensive range' when you dip down to 1700-2000 rounds. I'd expect 2500-3k at least in 7mm/284.

True, but a true rifle loony would not reach 2500 rounds before it had to be rebarreled. Just sayin..... smile .

I had a 284win about fifteen years ago on a 700 short. Built it around the 120gr Nosler BT, if memory serves me right it was a 11tw barrel.

The rifle drove tacks, dumped deer in their tracks and fed like it had eyes. Shot two doe one night up in the western UP of Michigan on a farm that we had crop damage permits for. There was about 3 foot of snow on the ground and I was hunting a 200 acre oat field. Those two doe were digging in the snow out in the field at 500yds. I took aim from the fork of a small sapling and dumped the one doe in her tracks. The other just stood there and looked at her as she hit the ground. I couldn't believe she didn't even hop away, so I took aim on her and she met her fate right next to the other.

I will build another 284win soon, and when i do it will be on a long action set up for the heavies. The Nosler Ballistic Tip was great back then for what I built it for, but sure does leave a lot to be desired if you hit bone. I shot both those doe high in the shoulder because I didn't want them to make it to the woods. In result because of the Ballistic Tips, the whole front quarter on each doe was blood shot and no good even at that range.

All in all the 284 is straight up sexy in my book!

I have one in the Win. M88. Not the slickest feeding, but very accurate with Nosler 120 BT. But then it shot the 140 and 150 BT very well also. I have the 120s going 3200fps.

The powder I am currently using is Ramshot Hunter with the 120 BT.

Winchester Cases

Barrel length is 22"

5 shots well under an inch

If I ever get the money (never) a NULA in .284 is a rifle I would like.

Have hunted with two different .284 rifles. Model 100 that I purchased in 1964. Used factory Win 125g. Real deer dumper. Never had a feeding problem.

More recently a Browning Micro Medallion. One of my favorite hunters. Light, accurate, and the .284 does the job. It likes H4350 and Re19. I can get close to 3000 out of the 20 inch pipe shooting 140 Sierra Prohunters. Never had feeding problems. Slick.

A few yrs ago built a 30-284 on a Ruger #3. No feeding problems when I could get my gloves under the scope overhang!

Love the cal. Reloads great. If you want some "premium" brass buy 6.5-284 and expand the neck. More than adequate for whitetail.

Factory rounds is the only place I saw it. Sure did make a mess of things if that shot was back just a little.

As far as I can remember they were pass through shots. It was my favorite bullet for the .284 for whitetail.

120-130gr 7mm pills have killed for me in 7mm BR and 7/08 rifles, and I can imagine on smaller big game like WT, they worked perfect.

That bullet perhaps is a better one that what Rem uses in their 120gr HP 7/08 loads, undoubtedly a Hornady varmint bullet, as it came out long ago when their 140 corelokt was actually a 139 IL according to Layne Simpson.

The 125 I would believe was tougher, I seem to recall a SP.

We read of many rifles having feeding issues with the 284. I guess I was lucky, there are no feeding issues at all. Feed it fast medium or slow all speeds feed perfectly. The rifle is an old M77 tang safety that was orginally a 6mm rem. Absolutely no changes were made for 20 yrs. Recently the mag box has been lengthened to 3.1". Still feeds fantastically.

FYI it is on barrel #3. I use Rem 700 7 rem mag takeoffs. The 24" barrels usually end up around 23" long. RL-17 is THE powder to use these days. Great accuracy and higher velocities.

Azshooter,

Will you please share your RL-17 load recipes with us?

I have a Ruger M77 tang-safety short-action in Winchester 284 with a McMillan Ultralight stock. My very ancient load recipe below produced 3-shot groups that were just under an inch:

Winchester brass
53.8 grains of IMR 4350
150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet
CCI BR-2 Large Rifle primer

There are obviously newer loads and I want to start reloading with Reloder 17.

Here are a couple of other load recipes for the Win 284 that I have found on the web:

http://home.earthlink.net/~rfrailey/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/284loaddata.pdf

http://www.6mmbr.com/7mm284.html#284win

Note that the Winchester 284 won the 2008 1,000-yard F-Class Nationals (http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek088.html).

Hearing good things on RL17 for 6BR, 6.5x47, 260 and 7/08/284 so it must hold a niche in modest capacity rounds w/similar expansion ratios. I have alot of other powder to burn first, but may try some after seeing results others get in certain rounds.

I have a 660 in route... for a 284... was all sold on 7x08AI... but waffled at the last instant...

It'll finish at 23 and I dont' expect any issues.... think they make a 120 ttsx... that and a 139 Hornady mono gmax?

RL17 may be the first powder I try if I can order some.

Brass will be 6.5x284... I"ll get an expander die to 7mm and run Redding FL bushing dies...

rost, I'd never do an AI, 7/08 is G-t-G for what it is IMHO.

Sounds like you have it all worked out, like to hear about that load performance, should be sweet.

Thanks.

AI is the bomb in some calibers.... I just got to wanting the oddball once again... 223AI is worth it. If barreling... its no big deal to AI when chambering, there really isn't a downside to them actually... and they change the turbulence point to my favor.

I'll let you know how it all works out.

I just emailed you on your post about barrel weights regarding a 7-08 I had built on a Model 7 action. My gun was built to copy a Model 7 a friend of mine has in .284. He's an outfitter and guide for sheep and bear in Alaska and traded for the rifle as part of the cost of a hunt. His intended use is as a sheep rifle. His .284 is so fine that I patterned my rifle on it in all regards. I'd have had mine in .284 except that I was already set up for 7-08 and in the deer woods of the Adirondacks the ballistic superiority of the .284 over the 7-08 would not have been any real advantage. My friend is a rifle nut who has some very nice working rifles (Brno .375H&H, etc., etc.) He wouldn't have kept the .284 if it wasn't right in all regards including feeding. It has the standard Rem. magazine box, not a Wyatt. Beautiful rifle.

Interesting 'debate' over the 284 Win.

I'm on-the-fence as to what to buy/build next and the 284 Win is one option. I have 3, 6.5x284s, 2, 280 Rems, and a 7mmWSM. Ballistics wise it has nothing over the 280 Rem or the 7mmWSM, but still the 284 Win intrigues me.

Not certain that I would like the A-Bolt (if one could be found) that was made a few years ago in 284 Win with it's detachable/hinged magazine. Likewise, I'm not certain that I'd be happy with a Ruger 77 in 284 Win - again if one could be found. 2 of my 6.5s are on M700 L/A and have no issues with feeding; the 3rd is on a SC M70 and feeding issues were resolved when I replaced the mag and follower with WSM parts. The M700 does make a lighter in the end - by a few ounces.

I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.
