I have been shooting a 6.5-06 built on a Rem M700 standard action with a Shilen 9" twist barrel for about 20+ years. The barrel is a #3 contour 23.6" (600 mm) the sporting contour back when I built that rifle (I would go lighter now). Twist is 9", also the sporting standard in those days. It will stabilize up to a 160 gr RN, but won't a 165 gr semi-spitzer. I don't think you need over a 140 gr weight for hunting. The European standard was 7.87" (200 mm) then, and I think it is now as well.

I make brass necking .25-'06 up or .270 Win down, and use whatever is my favorite make of the day (most recently Nosler). I haven't tried the A-Square brass in 6.5-'06.

My 264 has a 30" Shilen 8" left twist with 6 groves. 1 1/4" dia. tapered to 3/4" at the muzzle. Hand laped with 11 degree crown. Weighs 12 1/2 lbs and shoots like a dream. Less recoil than 243. It also shoots much cooler than a factory barrel.

Block the magazine and go with 6.5x47Lapua! It will do all you want it to do on Southern whitetail or mulies! And if you get the right builder to put it together...it will shoot you tight little wads all the way back to 1300 yards! Later on....if you want to go to a longer cartridge....you can jerk the block out and Voila.....back to a long action!!

6.5/300 WSM. With a 120 gr premium bullet you couldn't beat it.

By the way, in case you missed it, Jeremiah was a bullfrog.

6.5-284 and if you want more barrel life go with a 6.5x47

The BEST brass, pick one powder, one bullet and it will shoot!

I am building my first 6.5 and it is a 6.5-284

I haven't shot much yet but it will out shoot me. With my old scope I managed a 1" group at 139 yards with a varity of bullets and a 40 mph cross wind. Bullets were 95gr Vmax, 100gr balistic tip and 100gr HP. all had 65gr of H4831 driving them.

If you neck up, your widow (after you are run over by a bus) will sell your ammo at a yard sale to the owner of a 25-06, who will force it into his chamber and blow up his rifle.

If you neck down, the 270 owner who buys your stuff will just think your reloads are weak and inaccurate.

6.5-284(Norma) chambered with a no-turn neck, 1:8" twist Kreiger 5R or Schneider SS barrel (ask Schneider if he can supply a polygonal barrel, otherwise a Pac-Nor 1:8 polygonal), Lapua or Nosler brass, H 4350 or H 4831sc powder, Nosler 130 grain Accu-Bond for hunting, Berger 6.5mm 140 Grain Match Target BT or Sierra 142 grain MK BT for target, Federal 210M or CCI BR2 primers. Moly coat for reduced throat wear and have at it. All the dope is here: www.6mmbr.com/SixFive284.html

Mine is a Cooper Phoenix and it shoots everything well, some phenomenal.

If your bolt face is cut for a magnum then use the .264 Winchester Magnum, or have a Pacific Tool and Gauge one piece bolt installed for standard cartridge head diameter. Better yet send the action to Gre-Tan Rifles and have a complete accuracy job done along with a precision chambering and installation job. Minimum 24" barrel or 26" for the magnum. Have a Vais muzzle brake installed for better accuracy with all the recoil of either cartridge. www.gretanrifles.com/

Nothing is gained by using any wildcat or improved weird cartridge, except talking points at the saloon. The 6.5x55 is also a great choice without the hassle. All three cartridges will kill a 200 pound deer, as will a .30-30, .223 Remington or Ford F-150 bumper. Have fun!

If you MUST mess with a perfect case, neck it down to .264. The fires of damnation aren't as hot for those with good intentions.

+1 for 6.5/06
