After years of using cheap Wal-mart sleeping bags it is time for an upgrade. I am looking to spend $250 or less...it will be used in tent spike camps in the elk woods. Looking for one that is water-resistant, easily packable and not too hot. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance! Erich

I just purchase this Mountain Hardware -15 deg. synthetice bag just for the same type of hunt you are doing. It is a Lamina -15 model, and it is $225.00 Being synthetic it does not loose it insulation value when wet like down. I hope link works! http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/sh...Sleeping-Bag_10092430_10208_10000001_-1_

Have you taken a look at the REI bags? I have one of their older synthetic models and it works great. Start here: REI sleeping bags

If you aren't talking about backpacking check out the Cabelas 3-D bags. I have one and love it.

Take a look at the Snugpak Military line. The Harrier bag is really nice. This site has the best prices on Snugpak gear. http://www.outdoorgb.com/c/snugpak_...rice_from=&sprice_to=&sbrand_id=

Thanks in advance! Erich The hot part is covered by venting.... I'd rather have to vent on warmer nights than to shiver on others... BTDT...

About a week ago REI had a Marmot zero degree bag (model is "Never Summer") for $185. That's a KILLER deal. Not sure if it's still on sale.

Wow no two recommendations are the same. I'll go out on a limb and say that's because in that price range you're looking at synthetic, and all the synthetic bags by better manufacturers are really all about the same. Pick a temp range and go for it. Recognize you are trading weight for temp range. I'd recommend looking at bags in person, as the girth, zippers and little features may vary slightly. I use a North Face Cat's Meow for summer and early fall and it's about as light a synthetic 20 deg bag as you can find, but it's a tight fit and the zipper seems to snag a little more than the 1980 vintage Cat's Meow I also own.

I went for ultra light and something that would pack very small, so I could use it for kayak camping. I got a mountain hardwear ultralamania, got it at REI for $200

I use the ALPS Mountaineering Desert Pine Mummy Bag. It is -20 degree bag. I got mine from Sportsmansguide. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?p=WX2&i=155104My dad uses the Guide Gear version of this bag and he loves it. To each their own. I have been real happy with mine. I would recommend that you get a light fleece bag to use if it is too hot. Get a good pad to go under the bag it will make a world of difference. Hope this helps.

I went for ultra light and something that would pack very small, so I could use it for kayak camping. I got a mountain hardwear ultralamania, got it at REI for $200 +1 to this. I needed to replace my cool-weather synthetic bag (generally used on rafts in Alaska and Fall floats here in CO) this year and went for the Ultralamina as well. It's the most "Down-feeling" synthetic I've ever touched. My only gripe is the clamshell zipper (versus a full side-zip). But I'm pretty sure it's the only synthethic with the packability (it packs as small as my 40deg Down bag) and comfort of down. Plus - it weighs in at <3 lbs. Currently on sale here for $180 (Long)/$170 (Regular) in the +15 model: http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___42562

Depends on what season and altitude. I like Western Mountaineering because they make some that are cut pretty wide. I can't stand narrow bags. Try before you buy!
