Well, I'm not new at this and I got duped on a trade.

Winchester '94 in 98% condition, except ...

It had these silver freckles on the receiver. I asked about them and the guy said they were always there. It was interesting. They were random enough in pattern to have been rust, but the remaining blue was not thin and a nice clean dark blue. No pitting in the silver.

I thought it might have been a finishing error and figured I would touch them up later, but saw no need for hurry since they had "always been there".

I stuck it in the rack and a week later all the silver specks had turned to rust spots.

He must have cleaned it with something before he passed it to me. What the ! did he use to turn the rust back to white without hurting the blue? I'd like to repeat the process and do some touchup before they turn brown again.

Any thoughts?

Apply a little oil and rub the metal with 0000 steel wool.

It works like a charm.

If oil doesn't work, try Kroil or RB17 and 0000 steelwool.

try the old type brake fluid[non silicon].

Sounds more like a salt issue to me. Remove the action from the stock and pour boiling water over the spots. Just a trickle is needed, but until the salt is washed out the spots will return.

I usually rinse the spots thoroughly and wipe on a small bit of Brownell's Oxphoblue. They seldom return that way.

Remember that Winchester 94 receivers are a really hard to blue, I think because of the composition of the steel itself. You'll often see flaws in the reblue job on a 94's receiver.

Depends on what year it was made. Pre-64 is normal blue. Post-64 top eject is mystery metal. Could be plated or painted. Normal blue will turn them purple. Some bluing solutions will work on them. All angle eject introduced in early 1980's until present are normal blue.

I wouldn't try to cold blue it.

My Uncle lent me his 30-30, which was left in a gun case under his bed for a number of years with a container of desiccant in the bag and it did the same thing.

Those Winchesters are just pain weird.

I would just clean the salt off - if it is salt, like the others has said and then use a rag saturated with Rem Oil and rub it gently and keep it rubbed.

The 30-30 was the cheapest gun that Winchester probably ever made and the quality of blue was not the best.

Have only been dealing with guns subjected to saltwater for decades and using this method for quite a few of them... And I have seen what happens when salt is not removed. A tiny spot of cold blue just might oxidize that bare spot left by the rust freckle...

But what do I know?

Nice thing about Oxpho in this application is that it turns any remaining traces of rust into iron phosphate which passivates the surface.

yup... It might even stop it from rusting...

And you accept his "Five rounds in a magazine is enough?" He is a total azz and the NRA should have had the good sense to dump him, instead of allowing his incredibly weak cover story. He has cost them...

Board Members are elected by the membership, not the corporation.

I understand that exactly and implicitly. Getting any information to the members is expensive and difficult, however. The board should have taken it upon itself to get rid of the pompous azz when his actions were public and clearly contrary to the best interests of the members and the organization.

Instead they allowed him to come up with a completely ridiculous excuse which is clearly both a lie and not much better than the original insult.

It's a presafety top eject. I don't know which year. Probably post 64.

The rust was odd in itself. It looked like it had been handled while someone was eating a melted chocolate bar, and had spread considerably since I last used it.

The 0000 steel wool and 3 in 1 oil worked well to remove all the brown while leaving the blue intact. It wouldn't really except a cold blue touch up. It would become a mottled color and rust again in short order.

The person I picked it up from was driving a lawn service truck. It is my suspicion that Sitka was right. I bought it during snowy weather. I think it had been subjected to gloves contaminated with sidewalk salt or fertilizer. It may also have been subject to the forests near Vancouver.

I disassembled it and gave it a nice hot water bath. Warmed the metal with a heat gun and applied some Brownells. It took the bluing nicely. Even a trained eye might miss the results. It's been several weeks and I don't see any sign of the previous issue.
