I believe 16.5 is minimum but there is a minimum overall. Check the Canadian Firearms site at Mirimichi. Pumps are leagal. Magazine capacity for semi auto is 5 rounds max.

I thought Canada had a considerably shorter barrel allowance than the US, minimum overall length being the other detail to consider. (Seems to me I've read that certain older leverguns, sometimes ordered in 12 -14" barrel lengths could be owned in Canada, but I could be wrong.

I dont know what the minimum barrel length is in Canada, but You cannot go less than 16" in the US without paying a $200 Federal Tax on a Short Barreled Rifle. The SBR then becomes a Title II, Class III weapon for eternity (even if you rebarrel it to a longer barrel) it will forever be listed as a SBR and you will have to comply with some states laws that ANY Class III weapon is ILLEGAL in said state. You would also not be able to transport your Class III SBR across the border.

Hope that helps

Minimum length is 18" unless the barrel is from the manufacturer, so the short "Trappers" are okay as well as the 12" and 14" Norinco and Remington shotguns, Bottom line is that "you" can't shorten a barrel below 18" !!

Last fall they wouldn't let my buddy take in his Marlin .45-70 Guide Gun on the basis of too short of a barrel.

Sounds to me like the customs guy was making up the rules - no surprise there. Living close to the border and crossing back and forth many times a year, I've had border people from both sides come up with some pretty arbitrary rules.

As long as the overall length is in excess of the metric equivalent of 26", and the barrel is factory length and it is not designed to be shot by one hand, you should be okay. Again, when in doubt, go to the Firearms Act and do the research, or call the CFO closest to you, or call 1-800-731-4000.

No, the overall length of the firearm has to be over 26".

The overall length is factor as well, and works out to just around 26 ". Barrel length is only one critical dimension
