Hey gents, I am in the market for a new neck turner. I have been using a Sinclair since 1991, and it has course thread on the cutter adjustment. This makes it very hard for fine tuning. I have been told the K&M is a really nice micro tunable unit, any input and experiences is greatly appreciated. I just sent my stocker his fee and will be receiving my 6.5/284 hopefully by weeks end. I got to shoot my 5R 308 at 600 on Friday and it was a ball. The range master wouldn`t check me out at 600 because I wasn`t familiar with moa comeups at the various distances, I think I got them down now, he did state that I shot exceptionally well for my first time and the shooting was plenty good enough to sign me off at 600. I hope we can sit down and discuss the comeups and will sign me off from my understanding of the moa. I`m new to the long range target shooting, but am wanting to learn bad.

Tim-- I have the K&M and it works well. Just make sure you get the expander mandrels and die for the brass or the brass will be too tight on your turning mandrel. I f you want to borrow my K&M and see how you like it, let me know, as I'm not using it right now. Looks lke you are going thru the LR phase I went thru a few years ago. It definitely is fun, especially when you start popping those 1000 yd prairie dogs.. I've kinda gone back to the basics and have found that with my "campfire inspired" rifles, any deer within 700 yds is in trouble and thats further than you an usually shoot around here. The six I killed this year ranged from 165 yds to 525 yds. That 5R 700 is about perfect deer medicine in the woods or on the beanfields and powerlines. Let me know if you need help with the comeups.. that's my cup o'tea....

It sure wouldn`t hurt to hear anothers explanation on this subject. I ran into the guy who checked me out today at the 100 yd line and he suggested to bring a different rifle to have a new trajectory to figure out, new things to think about.

K&M is really pretty nice. I first bought the Sinclair and then eventually bought the K&M. I set the sinclair up to do the rough cut and take a real fine cut with the K&M. My brass is so smooth it looks as though its polished. Be sure you get the flutted carbide cutter as it also removes any donuts that may form. K&M and sinclair neck expanders are not the same so you will need one of those as well. If you have any questions or run into problems re neck tension etc Kenney is a great resourse as well. He helped me sort out a problem with my .300 ultra brass and it really made a difference in my groups. I have a chuck that I removed from a Lee string turner that I chuck in my drill and turn the cases at medium rpm. Can turn and prep about 50 cases in an hour. Slick!

TiT, I have like 4 from Sinclair.A odd duck from Hart and 2 from K&M. The Sinclair is a very basic model that will get the job done. crude adjustment.Im not much for Aluminum bodies on neck turners. If you hold the turner in your hand as it goes from cold to hot because of friction and the heat from your hand the size will change.Kinda sucks. Hart, Strange looking animal with a body made out of steel. Crude adjustment.but tank tuff and not any measurable size change with friction or hand heat.Good unit but kind of dated. K&M, very precise adjustment. You can dial this thing in like a mic to hold size.Al body but I can live with that.More options than a new car.Carbide mandrel is sweet. enjoy dave
Only accurate rifles are interesting.

I've modified my Sinclair neck turning tool. I added a jack screw so I can remove the arbor and then replace it in the exact length. I also reamed a hole across from the cutter. After removing the arbor I drop a rod thru the hole, the rod contacts the cutter face. Then I install a Federal Dial gauge that I bought on ebay over the rod. I can adjust the cutter in .0001" incraments, remove the indicator and rod, replace the arbor and I'm back in buisness in seconds. I made a few spare tools so I can leave them set up for the fussy cartridges.

Dave,
I think I have found exactly waht you are talking about. With my Sinclair NT 3000 (the big one) set at the same setting, I get different neck thicknesses unless I turn all the brass in one setting. I found a full .001" difference between brass I had turned on two different days...........which really pissed me off. It kind of messes with neck tension if the necks are different thicknesses.

Stiller Precision Firearms makes a great neck turner, easily adjustable, and very accurate. It has .0001 increments of adjustment and is available with different arbors for different calibers. Butch

Blaine, Steel is a better material IMHO. I made one of my own out of steel a number of years ago and its a much larger unit than any we have talked about here. Its the set it and forget it kind of neck turner. The K&M is the slickest set up I have seen.Never got around to the round pumkin thing yet. dave
