gota dumb question but is the 22-250 based on the 308 round? so if one were to swap barrels from same make and model from 22-250 to 308 you would be good to go?

They both use the .473 boltface.

It is based on the 250 savage case which was base on the 300 savage case. All have, as stated, the 473 bolt face

Not quite.
The .250 Savage was introduced BEFORE (1915) the .300 Savage (1920) and the .300 Savage is based on a shortened, blown out .250 Savage case.
The .22-250 is indeed the .250 Savage case necked down with no other changes.

As others have said, it's not exactly based on the 308, however, they do both share the important dimensions concerned with a swap, the bolt face and same general length (short action).

So a swap from 308 to 22-250 (or vice versa) is a very straightforward job. The only issue in "swapping" another barrel on to your action is to check headspace. Otherwise, it's pretty much a plug and play operation.

a local shop as a Remington 700 LH in 22-250, I have a take off brrl and HS stock left over from a conversion. looking to put the action into the old stock and replace with .308 26" heavy brrl. Thinking of having it cut down to 22" or possably 20" and re-crowned first. Sinper Carbine similar to the Savage. Then recover what I can out of the 22-250 brl and stock.

The left hand Model 700s in .22-250 were only made during the first run of left hand short actions around 1989 to 1991 or so.

On the one hand, kind of a shame to take apart a good rifle in that caliber when they are sort of rare. But, it's your rifle.

On the other hand, those were some well made Remingtons so at least you're starting with a good action as a basis for whatever you do.

I did not know that, THANK you for the info. Its sight unseen, I only saw it at their website, no photo(discrpiton only) and price, less than 500. Anyway I was assuming it was the more recent version with the star wars stock, angular with vent holes. Ill be making a trip to look this weekend.

I cant say Ive ever had a desire to own a 22-250 not a varminter. If it is rare I might just do it.

Okay, now I have to say, "oops". For some reason I was assuming it was the wooden stocked BDL version and completely forgot that they have made a few different left hand varmint models in .22-250. If it is one of those, then what the heck, twist on any caliber you like.

FWIW, 308 Wn is based on the 300 Sav. So no surprise on the dimension match.

You might have to get a new magazine. Some manufacturers put blocks in the magazines for the shorter 22-250.

you won't have mag issues,...the short 700's in the common 22-250, 243 308 etc. all have the same mag box and follower,...only the small case 222's and 223's etc have a different mag setup
