i will be going on my first ever guided hunt this year. pheasant on a private reserve. the limit is 6 birds, triple what the state limit is as they are farm raised and released into the wild. this hunt will be with a guide and a dog. my first time with both, cost is $150. should i tip the guy? if so, how much is fair?

I'd Flip him the bird . . . .
I mean I would tip him with the price of one bird ($25).

If this is your first hunt with a dog and birds. I suggest, you let the birds come up high enuf to make sure you don't shoot the dog. Other than that it's a real truck load of fun.
Wish you luck on your hunt.

ironeagle,
tipping is sort of expected, and the normal is 10-15%. If the guy and his dog is very good, go high, if they are good, go for the average, and if they don't really work for for you, then go low.

As far as tipping is concerned like it or not its part of the industry and the guide will probably expect one. I'd take BMT's advice if he was a good guide who worked for you, if he's not then I wouldnt tip him.

I guide on a preserve, 3 to 4 hr hunts, usually 12 to 40 phez. Tips are greatly appreciated!! (especially if you have good dog work)Just got done doing a 20 phez hunt tonight. That said, only about 20% of the hunters do tip. I certainly couldn't make a living off it, $40 for 4 hrs isn't much, I do it as I enjoy it in the fall after working my regular job. ($10 goes for gas alone back and forth) and the dog requires time, food and birds for training/polishing up. I bust my butt when guiding, keep dogs in top manners, I flush the birds - and have the multiflora cuts to prove it, LOL! And yes, do watch the dog please!!!

Use common sense. Only tip if it's deserved.

Thanks. Yep, that's NW PA all right. I'm just a bit south of you. I have a friend that guides, with his dogs, at a place down in Butler County, was just curious if you were at the same place by chance.

Nope!! I guide at Hatchers here and at Homestead some. Only ones I have been to south of me are Gobblers Knob and Firebird.
