Here's my cow, we chased some bugles and had 15 or so bulls within 80 yds, finally some cows moved through the jack pines above them and I took this one with my Savage 99 308 and 150gr Hndy GMX I reloaded... bangflop right there. Done in the first 2 hours.

Having my daughter and son-in-law there made it very special for me.

spent the rest of the weekend trying to get a young man his first archery elk on the whitemountain reservation but didn't have a raghorn cooperate. We were in lots of big bulls and cows, killing the herd spike is not as easy as it looks. Lucas had a great time anyway and at 13 has many more years to go.

Congrats! That right there is some of the best tasting steaks I've ever had. And with daughter and son-in-law along that's even better.

Great job! There is a lot of tastey steak there! Now I have to get off my butt and get out and fill a couple of doe tags before the rut begins. I am thinking of going old school 1899 with iron sights, just have to decide which one(s)!

The 99 represents my first gun I bought in '74, I was 17 and wanted something with a scope, had been using my Granddad's 30 30 saddle ring for a couple years. Well, I bought a used 99ec with 4X redfield wideview scope for a hundred bucks. Killed alot of deer with it, it was my only rifle for years... I ended up selling it to buy that same daughter a special birthday present she really wanted when she was nine... I was into archery at the time and had bought a new rem 700 3006... I was too young to understand sentimental value. I still kick myself for selling my first gun... idiot.

Anyway, Enrique, here at the fire had this gun that matched mine and it was for sale... cheap if I threw in a fishing trip... LOL... I had a 3X weaver with post and crosshair. Fit made in heaven... just had to use it, glad I did.

Kent...

That cow elk looks nice and "meaty"... bet she's gonna be great eatin'!

Looks like your daughter was havin' fun... if that big grin on her pretty face is any indication of the good time she's havin'!

You're a lucky man, my friend... 'cause you're makin' some fine memories. You're truly blessed! wink

Thanks Ron, yep I'm blessed for sure.

I forgot to say how great it felt to hold a 99 on a hunt again... yep, it felt like home.

Kent;
What the hell happened to those 15 bulls, or were you just hunting for tender meat? A great picture and great memories; love it.

I had an antlerless tag, the bulls and the rest of the cows just stood there and finally wandered off after a bit. It always amazes me how after the shot, you could shoot the rest of the herd, seems to happen every time.

Rifle bull hunts are in late November.
