All due to shade tree gunsmiths trying to lighten the trigger pull.

Not so, Obiewan swampman...I know this from EXPERIENCE...My younger brother does NOT tinker with his rifles & like you, he's a true believer in 700's...pulled the trigger on a forkie and nada...went to lift the bolt & it went bang...he brought it to me & I put in a Timney & problem is gone...this was 20 or so years ago...

I let someone tune one for me. Someone whom I thought knew something about such things. VERY STUPID MISTAKE!!!
Returning to the truck after a hunt, I released the safety and the rifle discharged. Naturally I had the rifle pointed in a safe direction. But it definitely scares the unowhat out of you!!!
Ever since then, NOBODY but a REAL gunsmith works on my rifles!!!
Messing with triggers manufactured prior to recent specifically designed user adjustable models is simply not worth the potential risks, be it physically, emotionally, and/or assuming liabilities (think lawyers).

Missed the television spot expecting it to be a typical left wing hit piece. Unfortunately, it seems to me that one only needs to read Remington's own internal memos to confirm that some rifles will indeed fire w/o the trigger being pulled. No shade tree gunsmithing required. Over the years Remington was able to reproduce the problem but their own legal seemed to recommended against a recall since it would cost more than potential liabilities. Then, one generation of management passed the buck to the next trying to handle things quietly and avoid opening Pandora's box. Along the way reputable users to include the Marines and SWAT types documented the issue. Heck, even Consumer Reports did during a rifle comparison test back in '68 and encountered the issue! All this mess because Remington didn't want to raise production costs by $0.05 back in '48 since the project was $4,000 over budget. Disappointing. Link: http://www.cnbc.com/id/39759366/
