Hi All,I picked up this Savage 99 303 a few years ago. While I'm fairly familiar with Marlins,I'm not so with Savage.I was told I'm the 3rd owner and that the first was an employee of Savage. It was made in Utica,NY and is 303 savage caliber. It has no extra holes anywhere, the bore is mint etc.The serial is 337XXX.What can you tell me about this?

Thats a 99-H Carbine. Made in the early to mid 30's.

I can tell you should send that to me right away.
That is a nice piece of wood on that 99 H. Made in the mid 30's. Shame about those sling studs but useful.

I've owned a lot of these and have seen a lot of these but this particular model is not usually found with wood like that. That is extremely attractive wood! As a fussy collector, the swivel studs really make me cringe, particularly when the wood is sooooo nice.

That is some very nice wood on that one boltman. And the metal looks like its got condition too. A well cared for gun.

Thanks for all the responses.Geez..its pretty nice for a rifle that old huh.I found it in a very small gun shop close to where I live.I've always liked the wood and I think the price of $495 wasnt too bad. This is just the way I purchased it.I took it out hunting once, but didnt see any deer.I made sure to buy a lifetimes worth of Winchester silvertip ammo.A keeper for sure!! One more pic

I would have bought it for that price in a heartbeat. I think if it were mine I might try to swap the swivel studs out with some vintage ones.

Shouldn't an "H" with that serial have a carbine style butt? Murray says 1938 was the change to the shotgun type. That serial around then?

I was curious about the buttplate. It did look like it was the shotgun style but there wasn't a good enough angle on it for my old eyes to see. A good explanation for the why the wood is so nice on that rifle is that the story is true - the original owner was a Savage employee. I would certainly get a letter on the gun. Could be some notation about the wood or maybe who it was sold to. Or, maybe there is no entry in the record at all :0

The front sight got me looking more closely. Bad angle but doesn't look like a ramped front sight. I'm no expert but it looks like an oil finish on the wood.
Levergunz, is the front sight ramped?

Levergunz, is the front sight ramped? Steve99,No ramp on front sight. Its steel/brass and dovetailed into barrel and looks like the same vintage as my 1936 Marlin carbines. The buttplate is curved and made of steel with SVG stamped into it.No oil finish on wood.It has a gloss finish(type of varnish???).

Levergunz,
Thanks. Your H sounds right then with the dovetailed sight and the carbine butt stock with a varnish finish as shown in Blair's top two photo's. According to the Savage99.com database, your carbine was made in 1931.
There is a sticky at the top of the Board, Misc Info, contact info to get a factory letter is in there if interested. Might be some interesting history in the letter.

Levergunz, is the SN stamped on the underside of the butt plate and on the stock?
Some people are having a hard time thinking it's original I guess.

It would be interesting to know if the numbers match on metal wood but I'll say this, I'd bet a lot that the forearm and buttstock are matched to each other.

That wood is correct. All day long. Buttplate is correct also. Metal finish is factory applied. Thats what a real one looks like.
