Found a pretty good price one one brand new locally - would like to pick up a 20ga slug gun instead of going ML for both seasons this fall.

Any experience with these? +/- ?

It has the cantilever mount on it.
Thinking of putting a Redfield 2-7x33 on it.

Thanks-

My son has a Mossberg 12 & 20 ga pump guns and uses those slug barrels too! Why the little 20ga slug gun is all that is needed for deer in the woods etc. This combination seemed very accurate after he sorted out what brand of "slugs" the barrel liked best. Now he has put 3 shots inside of a 4 inch circle at 75 yards with this 20ga and that is good to go he says.

tdn, go for it. With the cantilever mount, it should be pretty accurate. One thing though, try a lot of different saboted slug 5 paks. Every darn slug gun, I've ever been around, was picky on what they'd shoot the most accurately.

I believe all of the cantilever barrels are rifled. If yours is, I would start my slug testing with the Remington Buckhammers. They are absolutely outstanding, in accuracy and effectiveness. Plus they are affordable.

I've used one for years in MI to kill deer in the shotgun only zone. 2-3inch grouping at 100yds with ammo it likes is the norm. Shoot all the sabots that you can get your hands on. Make sure that you put good glass on it for whatever reason slug guns are much harder on cheap glass than rifles. I'm on my third scope in 8yrs.

I use a Mossberg 500 20 guage, with a Leupold VXI 1x4x20 shotgun/muzzeloader scope and it works great.
Started off using Remington premier copper solid slugs till they went crazy with the price.
I now use Hornady SST's and they work as good or better than the remingtons. I know alot of guys who use the Hornadys and like them also.
Good Luck

I've had several mossy 500's over the years and find them to be excellent servicable little guns. I recently traded off a little 20 ga that I am regretting. I would think that for a slug gun the 20 you are looking at would be a great deer gun. The only thing I might warn you about is their light weight so if it was a 12ga I might expect it to kick a bit with slugs but being a 20 it s/b fine. As I think of it I had an older 12ga with a plain 28" barrel and it was not difficult to roll a paint can with slugs out to about 75 yds. with no sights.

Will be the dissenter. Suffered with one for years with the smooth slug (modified, iron sights but scoped it), cannot recommend one. Mine would misfeed when muzzle-up (especially fun in bird season/differnet barrel). Rattle rattle rattle. dvdgeorg's suggestion makes a lot of sense to me, preferably used. You will burn a pile of money buying slug ammo, which get's old, especially when the offerings change every year and you have to re-sight with a new ammo. Don't mean to sound like a curmudgeon, sorry. My past frustration showing through!
