I'm trying to decide between the two for a fun 22 for my 16 year old. Anyone shot both to compare?

Some things I noticed at our club, with AR rimfire clones: The Smith is similar in function and disassembly, to actual ARs. The Colt variation, is not.

Get the Smith 15-22 or the GSG-5. They work great. The Colt is a peice of excrament.

I've just handled them at the store, but the S&W feels too light and all plastic. The SR-22 feels more like a real gun with some weight to it. I'd pick the SR-22 for myself.

I'll probably go with the S&W as I think my son will like it better. After all it is his christmas present, not mine.

I have collected .22s for decades. I was wondering which AR type .22 rifle to buy. I purchased the Smith, because it was light and because it is very similar to my "real" ARs. Each of us has our own reasons for buying or not buying. I just felt like the Ruger and I own quite a few Ruger rifles and hand guns, was really just anothet variation of the 10/22. I also looked at the Sig. I'm sure the Sig is a quality rifle, but it was also heavy, compared to the M&P 15-22. I am very pleased with my decision. Heck, they're all good guns and a lot of fun to shoot.

My 2 10-22s just sit and pout in the back of my gunsafe since I brought home the 15-22. Quite a bit lighter than my real AR, The 15-22 is pure adult fun. Functions and breaks down to clean just like its big brother. A great plinker and when I put a scope on it, it is more accurate than my stock 10-22.

Dedicated upper, ala Tactical Solutions, and a AR lower. Feels like a real gun because it is. A lower plus a LPK shouldn't run too much over $200. And a upper can be had for $400 to $500.

Then you can always add a .223 upper later, or any of the WSSM's or the slew of other calibers offered for the platform.

By spending a few extra $$'s now you will open up a whole lot of options later.
