With all the furor raging (call 1-800-CARWRECK) about the Model 700 trigger/connector/safety et al, I would invite comments about a statement that I�ve heard 2 or 3 times. The jist of the statement is that �the Model 70, 3 position safety has caused more holes in the roofs of deer camps than anything.� Are there any of you out there who can comment on this, or who�ve had such an accidental discharge and are bold enough to tell it?

If there are holes in roofs at deer camps it certainly is not the guns fault. It is the idiot who took it into the building with a round in the chamber in the first place.

Maybe I don't spend enough time on the internet, but I've never heard anything like that about the M70. I have 9 of 'em currently and have owned several others in addition. I have personally done trigger jobs on all of 'em (not just adjusting the spring tension) with no ill effects on any of 'em.

Never heard it, but then again I'd never heard of the M700 issues that are supposedly going on. Do we need to remind people of basic gun safety? DON'T HAVE A LIVE ROUND IN THE CHAMBER UNLESS YOU'RE PREPARED TO SHOOT SOMETHING!!!!!

I wish I could remember more about the circumstances of the comments but I think they had more to do with the operation of the safety, not it's or the trigger's reliability....., that the safety was easily nudged from one setting to another and that when it was thought to be in the neutral position, maybe it was not quite so.

I've owned several over the years and still have two. One a push feed the other a pre 64. Never have had an issue with an unintentional firing. Wife has a Model 7 Remington, which is going to get a new trigger..

rogue1 I heard of it .There was a hunter that was drumk and missing a few smarts put his finger on the trigger and took the safty and yell fire in the tube he was shooting towards the floor hit the roof not bad same camp tho

No doubt in my mind that many makes & models of firearms have put holes in the roofs of deer camps , that is where alcohol & guns are in close proximity

Does Remington make M70's now? They've got enough PR problems with the M700.

You are right -Barnes do just pencil through the air. Of course, Berger's VLD (very low drag) bullets must do the same.

I think you need to get out of the house and go hunting.

Ah�.. I wondered how long it would take for the response to an objective question to become personal. But to your statement, I can�t go hunting. The only season that may still be open is bow season. And when I go hunting, it could be with a Model 70, a Model 700 or a No. 1 Ruger. The Ruger would not necessarily be my gun of choice but it has my safety of choice.

In my opinion, the M70 has one of the better factory over-ride hunting trigger/safety systems available. I'm of the opinion that the direct-acting military mauser trigger is a better choice for severe duty applications when the trigger / safety system is exposed to hard use and extreme foul conditions, but the M-70 design is one of the better efforts to duplicate this durability in an over-ride trigger.

The M-70 design appears to have a far better track record when compared to the now defunct problematic 700 Walker trigger with the floating connector. The new X-Mark Pro trigger system, which dumps the floating connector, appears to be a huge leap in the correct direction. At first blush this trigger appears to be very good, but I'm still not a huge fan of boxed up triggers that can trap and hold debris.

When I was 16, I discovered that if I put my finger on the trigger while aiming at a woodchuck, then flipped the Model 70 safety from the middle position to forward, the gun fired.

Can I get a lawsuit settlement or something?!?
