Check out this months Handloader, there is a good article on the 500 Express 3 1/4" it also touches on the black powder 500 as well.

I don't recall if it mentioned dies or components though.

When you get it ready to shoot I can help out based on my old Lyell 500 BPE. The book bt Graheme Wright ,"Shooting the British Double Rifle" is a must read for this and all DR's. Hunting's has it as well as other places.

Nice grab, if you hadn't I would have. In addition to Wrights book look for the Oct-Nov 2002 issue of "Handloader", issue #219. Ross Seyfied's article "Loading the 500 Express will tell you most of what you need. I have two 500s, one a 500 3" like yours from I. Hollis and a Manton 577/500 #2. Both shoot Seyfrieds recommended loads very well. 4CH from Mt. Vernon Ohio has dies, Hornady and Buffalo Arms have brass and there are a bunch of moulds available in the 340-440 gr range.
I think, looking at the photos of that rifle, if you rework the lower tang or trigger plate and get kink out of it the safety will may work more smoothly. Rather than getting another stock made you may also be able to shorten the verticle bar from the sliding safety a few thousandths at the top to free it up with the stock in place. Stone andd rust blue the barrels and action and you'll have a very nice rifle.
Best.

A month ago, I acquired a H&H .500 Express delivered in 1890. "CHARGE 5 DRAMS CASE 3 1/4 INS".

In this gun the nitro for black regulation load has proven to be 52 gr. IMR 4198 with Woodleigh .510 dia. 440 gr. SP. with 7 gr. polly filler.

Couldn't find a website or phone for 4CH. Do you have contact info? Thanks.

That's CH4D. Ask for Dave the owner. If it can be reloaded he knows what's needed and how to do it.

500 EXPRESS DOUBLE RIFLES AND OTHERS

Fellow believers,40 years of these delightful items , shooting success and failures has allowed me to gain much practical experience. I suggest a good starting point for contemporary enthusiasts is a study of the published book Shooting The British Double Rifles by Graeme Wright. He is an Australian big game hunter and writer. Being a retired Australian Airforce pilot now flying commercial he has covered many places on the globe. He has quite a good list of experienced hunters and technical enthusiasts in he interacts with especially throughout Canada and here. The book is into its third edition. You would have to do a search as I do not recall who the North American distributor is. Basically editions evolved with the addition of data.

Generally I would class it as a practical hunter/re loaders book. The focus is development of loads and shooting with contemporary components.

When I got the rifle in person - there was a cracked weld that I just didn't want to deal with, so it is going back to the seller today. If you are interested, give him a shout.
