This is probably an old question , but to me, right now , is valid because I actualy intend to do it.
I have recently aquired several lever action rifles in calibers that have a trajectory similar to thrown rocks. A couple will be equiped with low powered scopes but most will have reciever sights.
How should I sight in the reciever sighted rifles? Should I have the point of impact covered by the ball on the front sight, or should I have the point if impact just above the top of the front sight, ie the "six o'clock hold".
For shooting critters I'm inclined towards having the front sight cover the spot I want to hit.
Any advise will be seriuosly considered.

I'd say it depends on which you prefer and the distances you are shooting. Covering the target with the bead is faster to me, but not as precise depending upon the size of the bead. Most beads will cover an 8" target at 100 yards and it only gets worse beyond that. I have a rifle chambered in 300 Savage that carries a receiver sight and it's sighted in at the top of the bead at 100 yards which means the bead covers the target at 200 yards. It's something you can get used to but you won't win a match in competition.

Thanks for the input. As always, I appreciate any help I can get in matters concerning rifles and reloading. I've only been screwing around with this stuff since the late 50's so I still have questions. Often, someone who has only been involved a short time, will come up with a solution to a problem that didn't occur to me.

The only unscoped rifle I have is my Dad's 1927 Winchester '94, in .30-30 cal., with an old iron Williams apeture ("peep") rear sight. The original front blade sight sucks, but I have it set to cover POI at 100 yards.

My favorite approach, by far, is to get rid of the bead front sight and replace it with either a sourdough or patridge style, as shown here:

Marble's Sourdough

Brockman's Patridge

I take a six o'clock hold on the target, with the top of the blade just kissing my intended point of impact. The philosophy that states "You can't hit what you can't see" rings true for me, especially as the range increases. Worked okay for Elmer Keith, too.

Note: My link to the Marble's Sourdough sight doesn't seem to work, but you can find this sight at www.brownells.com .

Mostly you'll want to sight those in to which ever way you want to hold the front sight. But word of experienced caution here sight them all in the same so you don't have to remember after its too late that this rifle is the one I sight at 6 oclock and not dead on.

you must learn to sight with both eyes open and you will always see the target.and where the sight is at. receiver (peep) sights are the easiest to use, i havent used the ghost rings but I am giong to try them, it looks like a good idea,Hubert
