I wish S&W had offered a three inch/round butt Model 65 in a five shot .44 Special. That would have been an unbeatable CCW revolver. In Titanium (no key lock) it would have been awesome!

The 696 is as close as they came. Wouldn't trade mine.

.357 Magnum simply due to its versatility.

Was a .44 Magnum slut for 20 years, had a nice 10 year fling with the .41 Magnum, traded the .44 magnum love for the .45 Colt about 15 years ago and never looked back, and have recently found just how nice that .44 Special really is.

But my first centerfire handgun 42 years ago was a .357 Magnum. If I had to sell all but one handgun, a 4" or 6" .357 revolver would be the one I'd keep.

I know. Wouldn't at all mind having one of those, but I'd prefer the five shot Model 65 in .44 Special.

What I shoot most is .45 ACP
What I like best is .41 Mag.

As much as I use love the .22lr and the .45acp, I also have to agree with that statement.

I really have a hard time wrapping my mind around the thought of a favorite handgun and/or cartridge - or the though of selling all but one.

Hard to pick one so I will pick one for each category.

Fun: 22LR (Browning Buckmark)
Concealed carry summertime: 9mm (Kel-Tec PF-9)
Concealed carry winter: 45auto (1911)
Hunting: 44mag. (S&W 629)

Those are my picks.

Hawk,

Based on my experience with the 696 and Charter Arms Bulldogs, I gotta think a .44Spl M65 would be a REAL hand full. The Bulldog gave me just about all I want recoil wise. For sure a M65 in that caliber would be a 'carry a lot, shoot a little proposition', at least for me.

I really love the .357mag in a revolver and the 10mm in an auto. But if I could only have one it would be a .44SPL.

I've owned the old Bulldog .44, and it was the old one from the 1980s which is lighter than the newer ones. With Pachmayrs on, it wasn't all that punishing as I recall. The Model 65, I believe, is even heavier than the newer Charter Arms Bulldog .44, so should, in that caliber, be even less punishing.

Hawk,

My Bulldog was all polished stainless and I sold it to buy the 696. The jerk (a good buddy)I sold it to still taunts me about it. Wish to hell I had it too. But it was the only handgun which ever caused me physical damage. Pinched my hand between the grip and the pistol rest raising a heck of a blood blister!

Never heard of a M65 in .44spl. Guess if I ever saw one I'd buy it too. Just a sucker for .44s
