As I remember it it had a custom stock on it with a raise check piece set up for a left hander.

No offense to the original poster, but funny how this subject comes up once a year..next up, Albert Johnson..or I should say Charles Bronson.

Joe Kidd, good flick!

I've also noticed how it has a left handed check piece on it and Duvall shoots it right handed....not that it matters all that much, I guess.
I have a custom 250-3000 with a left handed check piece and I shoot it right handed very comfortably.

Actually, there are 2 99s. The first one had an ebony schnable, while the last one had a rounded forend with ribbon checkering on it. Both are engraved.

I think Joe might mean that Duvall's 99 has a standin. Could be, at the end of the movie he falls down and the stock breaks. If they didn't film in sequence, they might have pulled in another 99 to finish earlier scenes.

I didn't notice that there were 2 separate 99's when I watched it.

Notice that the Ross was kept safe in a wooden case.

There are several classic firearms in that movie. I also liked the broomhandle and some sort of other unusual classic bolt rifle.(Remington Keene or early Mauser maybe?) Seems that Eastwood has a lot of unusual/classic firearms in his movies-maybe he is a rifle loony. PH

YES, notice the rifles in his movies but also notice which ones HE chooses to shoot. I would be curious if Clint himself gave thought to what guns are chosen. We certainly know Tom Selleck gives great thought. Personally, I would really enjoy knowing if Clint was an admirer of the Ross rifle. Clint: are you a lurker here? And maybe you could weigh-in on pre-mils vs. post-mils as well. And EG's.

By the way, I really enjoyed that scoped Keene as well. I don't recall all the particulars but I believe it had some post-factory modifications. I have a couple of Keenes here - one in .45-70 and one in .43 Spanish. They are fun to shoot. More firepower than the Ross or the Savage given the tubular magazine that runs to the end of the barrel. For rugged western shooting needs where the action can get furious, they do have a downside. Cycling the bolt does not cock the hammer. So after each bolt cycle you have to manually thumb the hammer back. I suppose if a strong fan of the Keene asked me if I had ever lost a gun fight because of this feature I'd have to answer, "no."

There is a website imfdb.org that is pretty good and
accurate about guns used in movies. The editor even
points out guns being used out of their time period.
I saw a movie awhile back and Dwight Yoakum is using
a 99C if I remember correctly. Dont remember the title,
three burials, or something like that. It had Tommy Lee
Jones in it, who supposedly collects Savage 99s.

Yes - "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" is the movie you are referring to. And I do recall Dwight shooting a'99. Tommy Lee used a Winchester M94 .30/30 carbine. Great movie - with wonderful scenery.
