Looking to get some advise on two Cal. I have an opportunity to pick one of these two up for close to the same price. My choice is 35 Whelen VS 375 H&H

Depends of what game you`ll be hunting, and if African DG would ever on the agenda.
If Africa is not on the agenda, the 35 Whelen will handle any N/A big game.
On the flip side of things, one can easily justify owning a 375 without ever going to Africa. The 375 is an excellent choice for moose, bison, big bears and throw in a big elk. The 375 H&H can easily overlap hunting duties with the 35 Whelen.
Therefore, my logic and my vote, will go for the flip side of things, favoring the 375 H&H.

I'd pick a 35 Whelan for North America and a 375 for anyplace. The 375 Ammo is no more expensive and easier to find. I have a 9.3x62 that I use for everything except varmints. It was the original 35 Whelan.

get the .375, loan it to your son at Ft. Rich so he can slay all kinds of nasty beasties, then when he transfers somewhere else, you get your rifle back with all kinds of memories allready attached to it!

375 for sure. Too cool and versatile of a round to not go with.

its easier to find a .375 than a Whelen
buy the Whelen now, it is classic american!
buy the .375 later, it is classic african

GotAmmo, I'll try to answer this if you'll answer a NC question for me later...
Rifle? I'd probably go with the 375 first, as you can load it down to 270 (maybe 235) grain bullets, which are close to the Whelen's 250 offerings.
NC? Settle a debate. Best biscuit in Durham/Chapel Hill area. Bo's? Sunrise? Biscuitville? etc

Well we're Green and we're Gold, and we play better when it's cold. All us Cheese heads have our favorite superstar. We love Brett Favre.

I got the Whelen, it came with a surprising amount of ammo and brass. Thanks guys
The Biscuit question? well there's one place you left out thats little known. There's a gas station on Colemill rd in Durham called Tommy's They have the best I had.

I too would have to pick the .375H&H and don't forget, if you want a little more "clout" from that rifle, you can get it rechambered for the .375-Wby and pick up 150fps more and still shoot .375H&H if you like.

Enjoy your new Whelen! Great rifle caliber. Now if you're ever in that position again, split the difference and get a CZ 550 American in the 9.3x62!
Warm trails and blue skies!

I've got a 9.3x62, and enough ammo, brass, and bullets to last a lifetime.
I don't want/need a .35Whelen.
But, I'll eventually have a .375H&H.
YMMV...

Tonk,
For sure I'm with you on that. When the 8mm Rem Mag came out I had mine reamed out. Now for ease of communication I call it .375-.416 Rem Mag. It matches the Roy.
I took it yesterday for my elk opener stoked with 270 TSXes.

Ringman, I have a friend on mine who lives in Wyoming! He stands 5'8" tall and has 2 rifles, a .270 Winchester and a .375H&H, which now has been reamed out to .375"Roy" Wby. This guy weighs only 150 pounds and can really shoot that .375 like most people would shoot a .223 cal. He loves his 2 rifles with a passion.
