Just heard of one coming up for sale. All I know is it has a straight grip stock and some sort of gold inlay, no checkering, curved butt pl;ate. This info came to me third hand; no mention of calibre, barrel lehgth.

The major con is it is a post-mil. I can't think of a pro.

.308 with a 24" octagon barrel. I'd buy another one just to shoot if I could get it reasonable.
Yes, it has a crescent butt plate which people whine about. If you know how to properly hold and fire a rifle it's not a big deal.
It was a lame-azz attempt at an 1895 commemorative but they used a Win caliber...

It was nothing more than a marketing ploy.
24" barrel? An 1895 had a 26".
308? An 1895 came in 303 Sav.
Mikes right, all they'd be good for is to shoot at the range cause the only way you might get a deer with it is if you blind it with all the gold plating on it.

With 308 being the only caliber I don't need any more info. Thanks

Being in 308 is a net positive. IMO. They also have the old style lever safety. I'd try one out for a shooter if it were gifted or nearly so. I owned the best one ever made and I let it go.
When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

LOL on all the gold plating. "Dazzle 'em with brilliance and baffle 'em with gold plating" or you know how it goes. I never much cared for " Bling Comemoratives" of any make, just needed some info on this one as it wasn't listed in the Blue Book.

I always thought too that it would make a decent hunting rifle, if the gaudiness was toned down. As far as being a substantive commemorative gun I felt them to be a joke. I would take one as such just to add it to the collection if nothing else.

To be fair to Savage, I was equally unimpressed with what Winchester came out with as far as their various gaudy commemoratives

Agree with Gnoahhh. If they didn't have the rolled engraving and the gold (?) plating it wouldn't be a bad looking rifle. SO, It falls in to stride with all the commemoratives as far as I'm concerned: garish.
If your auction rifle is as new/near new and has the original box (also in excellent condition), it may be worth going after if bidding doesn't go crazy. Don't know what a fair price would be: $450-500?

My one BIL hunts with a long barreled M94 commemorative. Buffalo Bill maybe? Not sure. It does hang nice when thrown to the shoulder. Nicely worn now, much of the gaudiness worn off, and actually one of the most accurate 94's I've seen come down the pike.

I recall when I was younger I was taken with that Winchester M94 Commemorative that had a long barrel and a forend that ran to the end of the barrel. Occasionally saw a used one without a box and not at a premium price. I thought it might be fun to hunt with but never picked one up. Later, when Winchester started to chamber the older Winchester calibers such as .32/40 and .38/55 I was at least impressed they went with the vintage chamberings. I've never bought one though. The simple fact is I like the vintage original ones better and I've picked up some nice shooters over the years that were reasonable in price. For example, I have a M1894 in .38/55. It has a ton of original finish, like new bore etc. The barrel has been cut back (very professional job) and the mag tube set a 2/3rd length. Most people I show it to assume it is special order. It handles a whole lot better than an original with 26 inch barrel and full mag. I paid less than a commemorative would have cost
