I just bought a new browning a bolt 2 composite stalker in 280 rem. I will be putting a vortex diamondback 2-7x35 scope on it with talley lt wt mounts. Thought's on this for elk. Also would low mounts work? Thanks for the reply's

160 Partition or 162 Interlock will be good in it. I would have no qualms with using a properly loaded 280 on any elk. It's a heck of a cartridge.

I'd stoke it with the 140gr TTSX and then start worrying about finding the elk, and stop worrying about shooting it.

150gr Nosler Partition and the 280 seem made for each other.

I could not agree more! My Win 70 featherweight .280 Rem loves the 150's. No matter what else I try, They don't shoot as well as the 150 NPT's.

I built a .280 Rem on a VZ-24 and intend to use it next year for elk. I'm loading up 175 grainers in it but wouldn't hesitate to use the 160-162 bullets as well. I just like the extra momentum one gets from the heavy bullets.
Handloaded I expect almost 2,800 FPS loaded to the same pressures as the .270 Winchester.....It's not a 7mm Magnum but it's also built on a #1 contour and I like light weight rifles. I see no reason it won't do the job assuming I can shoot it.....and it ought to be easier to shoot than the .35 Whelen I shot this year.
The .280 Remington is a fine cartridge IMO!

The 280 Remington loaded with a controlled expansion bullet between 140 and 160gr is absolutely sufficient to kill elk.

I'd buy several different 140 and up projectiles of whatever flavors are available, and take whatever that rifle likes best.Any good bullet in those weights will do the job as long as you can consistantly put them in the right spot.

280 rem? Really! You have never been a 7mm man but i see you are finally coming around. Congrats on a nice gun. Yes the talleys should work in low. If you want me to I can call talley and check. Dean

150gr Nosler Partition and the 280 seem made for each other. What he said. I kept a 700 Classic in .280 for a long time, and it dearly loved 150 grain partitions.

With either the 154 gr, Hornady IB's or the 160 gr. Swift A Frames, I got my best results with about 57 grs. of H4831SC or 52 grs. of H4350. BTW, even at a "mere" 2680 fps., the 160 gr. NP out of my first .280 would open well at a full 400 yds. E

Mule Deer's load of 58 grains of H4831 hits the 2950 fps with 150 grain partitions in my rifle. H4831, R19 and Hunter all run 150 partitions really well in my 24 in CDL.

My go to load in my 700 Ti is 150g TSX over RL22. Has worked well on mule deer and one spike elk.

I have settled primarily on 150 gr. slugs for my .280 as well. Usually either Partitions or Ballistic tips for lighter game at longer ranges. If I need more than 150 grains, I am going to a larger cartridge.
