Living about six hours north of Death Valley, I've made several trips there this year to see the flowers. I hadn't been there in 17 years. I think I found a new winter hiking spot <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> To those who understand what a desert usually looks like this year is truely exceptional. I've only uploaded a few of the pic's. -Just thought I'd share a little of the scenery.

Whats a desert w/o Sand Dunes? -Gotta picture somewhere of my eighty year old father, with a three foot stick, poking it down the animal holes in the dunes trying to scare up a side winder. No luck though! (I took him down on the second trip)

Thanks everyone. Shreck, on missing the desert, I can relate, I surely do miss the oceans.

Just a general (precautionary) note on Death Valley, its still a desert. We had a secratery from work go there because of all the media attention, she came back pretty disappointed, but then she doesn't care a whole lot for the desert either. The bottom country (valley) is going to be hot now.

Here's a pretty good link for flower updates. Click on California, then Death Valley. http://www.desertusa.com/wildflo/wildupdates.html

NevadaDan, I got a chance to see the painted desert during a rainstorm. WOW. When I was at 29 Palms we used to tool around in Joshua Tree and the desert between 29 Palms and Vegas. We had a shortcut, desert roads that came out somewhere 10 miles from Vegas. Having grown up on the coast I thought it was great.
I recall six of us going climbing into some beautiful canyon, I think it was posted, something about property of the university of Califosomethingorother, two coolers of beer and snacks, it was great. I still have photo's.

Thanks for the great pic's Dan...The wildflowers in Arizona were recently shown on the evening news....it was mentioned that in places it was something that hadn't been seen in many years due to recent rains....

you said you missed the ocean...this isn't quite ocean, the Pacific is 125 miles due west of here over the Chilkat Range and past Mt Fairweather...

This is home spring, summer and fall...on the beach on the right..... looking south toward Juneau which is 60 water-miles.

Eldred Rock Lighthouse (below)...south of Haines about 30 miles.....this is looking back north toward Haines...

Alasken 454, Like Shreck said welcome to the campfire. Great picture of Haines. While everybody thinks of salmon and halibut, looking at that coastline, I'll bet the fishing is pretty good for black bass, and rock fish too.

Shreck,
