I live in SE Ohio and need to use a bullet that will "splode" when hitting either a coyote or the ground around it - do not need any ricochets. I am thinking of using my 22 Hornet (single shot break action) with 46-grain hp's since it also is not very noisey. This seems to work well on woodchucks out to about 75 yards, which is far as I will be shooting. Will the Hornet work on coyotes?

Most certainly, especially at those ranges.

I think it would work at 100 yds or less with the right bullet. I'd want a repeater for a follow up shot tho'.

40 gr V-max. Out to 200 yards and have NEVER need a second shot. That would be for forty of so coyotes.

I prefer the Nosler 45 Solid Base softpoint, but they are sadly discontinued. A standard Hornet bullet will give plenty of "splode" but if you want to be sure of enough penetration, a 45-gr bullet designed for the 223 family might be better. They have slightly thicker jackets.

Recently purchased a 22 Hornet for the purpose of shooting coyotes in and around some urban areas. My 22-250 is too noisy.

Ricochet is a concern and also pelt damage.

Bullet and load recommendations would be appreciated.

Wayne

The Hornady 40 V-Max with Lil'Gun is the best i have tried in my A-Bolt and Encore Hornet. This load takes the Hornet to a new level and nipping at the tail of the 222 Rem.

Have seen some published loads for the 40gr V-Max and it seems 13grs of Lil'Gun is a good combination.

Any experience with the bullet on coyotes with regards to pelt damage?

Partially size 3/4ths of the neck (your choice on brass)

Use Rem 6 or CCI small pistol primers

13.0 LilGun

Your choice of bullet. I've tested 30 to 45 grains with good results.

Use the Lee Factory Crimp Die

That recipe works in an amazing number of rifles, but not all. Some guns prefer Acc1680 or W296, but usually at lower velocity and higher pressures.

I have been using AAC1680 - pretty good accuracy but not exactly speed demon loads. Think I will try the Lil Gun
Thanks for the responses.

I have killed coyotes with the 40 gr but it has always been the Nosler BT 40GR

I have bumped off a few with the 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip as well. I have taken a couple with the 35grain Hornady Vmax factory load.

The only folks who don't dig a "K",is them that have never shot one or don't reload.

Though admittedly,there numbers are many..................

To answer the original question........Yes the 46 gr HP out of the Hornet will work just fine! Shots to out to 150 yds should be a "piece of cake" and yield fur. Range can be extended slightly by using modern bullets but most everything else you have read here is "fluff"............

The sub 40gr V-Max is where it's at,in all regards...though the 46gr HP and 45SP's dig a leetle better on Deer.............
