OK all you 99 specialists, I need some advice. I bought a nice Savage 99 in .243 about a year ago, and I love the rifle so I've been on the lookout for another...that gun dates to about 1967 or so I think, SN is 11286xx.
But then yesterday I was in my local toy store and I happened on a 99 in 303 Savage. It's a little better than 85% probably close to 90%. Bluing is very good with just a little loss under the action. It is a takedown model with a straight stock, short shnabel forearm and a 24" barrel and it has the prettiest almost tiger striped Walnut. Serial number is 304xxx. He figured it as a model B but I'm not so sure. In any case I got a hold on it while I research it. He's asking $950, which seems steep, but it looks really good for 80 years old. There is also a box of unfired shells with it.
My question...what model is it, and is it way overpriced?
Sorry no pics, but I was only going in for some MEC bushings and some powder, so no camera. Will get pics on Monday.

Thanx for the help,
Boox

Sounds like a early "F" to me, if its as nice as you say price is about right. 303 ammo gos for 30.00 to $90.00 a box, does it come with a tang sight?

A 24" barrel on a 303 Savage takedown would be a 99B, and serial number puts it into 1927.

Shells are worth about $40-$50 depending on the box, so $900 for the rifle? Could be for 90%. You aren't getting a steal and you aren't going to be flipping it for a profit too soon, but it doesn't seem too much out of line.

What is the buttplate, crescent steel rifle or flat steel shotgun type. Is the barrel tapered. GW

Sorry guys, left out some details, Tapered barrel, with a dovetailed front gold bead, a Marbles flat folding leaf rear,(i.e. no elevator) and a Lyman #1 tang sight. Butt plate is shot gun style, horizontal ribbed steel as I remember but I don't remember if it said Savage on it. I know there was no Indian head on it.
No, I won't be flipping it except for some thing finer, I will keep it and hunt with it if I do buy it...then pass it down, I have four sons who are waiting for me to go to my final hunting trip.

Hmm.. 99B should have a crescent buttplate. A shotgun style buttplate with a tapered barrel should be a 99F, but it definitely shouldn't have a 24" 303 Savage barrel on it. 22" maybe, but not 24".

Jed ,Well a raised ramp with dovetail could be a "G"if it had a pistol grip stock, a straight stock ,shotgun butt, heavy barrel takedown with a 24" barrel with a dovetail in the barrel would be a "99D". A little more info would be nice. Don

What more info do you need? I also do not remember a raised ramp front sight..pretty sure on the 24" barrel tho...I say tapered barrel, but I won't swear to that...Also there is no checkering on the wood, if that helps...I'll be back in about an hour...

thanx, Boox
