Very much appreciate the positive comments, I'm fully reassured. (-:

I have a 722 in 300 Savage, and from what I can see of yours, your stock looks very factory. I'd have to do some research to see if the checkering is correct for a "B" grade, or higher grade 722.

Don

Thanks Don.
The pics I have come up with, (very few) showing factory checkered 722 and 721s, the grip pattern differs than this one. Mine has four forward points - they had two. However, I know little regarding this. It's definitely cut and is about 18 lpi. It shows some over-runs and very fine lines along the outer edges which may identify hand tooling vs rotatory tool cut, just don't know.

Have brass, dies and some Varget that ought to work, or might pick up some 4064. Also load for the 30 WCF and 22-250 now and may add a 7mm-08 or '06 next. Want a cup-n-core at about 150 grains, available locally and cheaper the better. Maybe Hornady or splurge for a Ballistic Tip? I imagine the TSX folks cringing at the very suggestion. OT

Despite Hornady's endorsement of 4064, I haven't found it all that great in the 300.

Varget will work fine. With a 150 you might start around 41 grains and work up a few tenths at a time until you find accuracy. You're working with a strong bolt action, so you can responsibly get the load up there enough to get Varget working right.

If you prefer to work at standard 300 Savage levels I recommend trying one of the 4895 powders.

I shoot a 700 Classic in 300 and I get excellent results with RL15 and 150 grain bullets. In RP brass, 44 grains is really good with flat base 150 Sierras and the 155 grain Berger VLD. My cartridges are loaded to 2.7" or a bit longer, instead of the 2.6" limit imposed by the Savage '99.

Thanks Mathman!

Ended up doing as suggested. Using Varget, new WW brass, WLR primers, 150gr Hornday SP, and OAL of 2.700" (off about .009" here). Five shots came together for 0.93" at 43.1gr; 24x scope, no chronograph and 33F. At 43.4gr there was a noticeable increase in report and recoil and they spread out again, same at 43.7grains which was very near full to the neck. Noticed nothing abnormal with the cases. Will work with 43.1gr and see what happens. Hopefully will have the 2700FPS shown in the Sierra manual. Do appreciate the input.

She's pretty mild and easy to get along with and even more purdy after a good bath. Recoils like a 7mm-08, perfect, and trigger adjusted down just fine... Debating a low mounted vintage scope, modern 2-7x, or going full-on ol' skool Lyman peep that came with it; comb's pretty low.

Heard at the range, "more gobble means more wobble."

Cheers,
OT

modern 2-7x

You might want to snap up one of the Vortex Vipers in that size that Doug has on sale right now.

Very nice rifle. I'm jealous. I have a Model 99 and a Model 14 Classic in .300 Savage. Great find. Don't see many of the old rifles like yours in that kind of great shape.

OT:

That is a nice rifle. I am thinking the checkering is aftermarket, but it is nicely executed. I picked up a real nice original 722 in .300 Savage last spring. Just haven't worked with it yet. Yes the comb is low, but I was able to mount some low burris zee rings and that is low enough for me to be comfortable. You can go 2-7 or 3-9 and still not touch off on the barrel. I put on a rebuilt Weaver 2-7 steel tube scope. Seems to fit well.

Also, I like your load. I am using 43 grains of Varget with 150 grain power points in my 99R. It is giving up 2650 and excellent accuracy. It is a top end load that needs to be worked up to. It may transfer over to the 722 and see how they fly. I am sparking them with CCI Br2 primers stuffed in in WW cases.

MM. My prejudice is more against "China made" vs "imported." However, Leupold and the Redfield Revolution are made right down the road from here and employ some good folks. Japanese glass purportedly... Not really up on it all but there are a couple other dedicated US firms doing the same.

Certainly Leupold can be knocked, often for valid reasons, but I'm a fan. Back in '00 or '01, I scratched the ocular lens on an M8 6x42mm and sent it in for repair on a Tuesday, via UPS about 60 miles. On Thursday, that scope showed back up; they'd rebuilt the turrets, replaced the exterior glass, purged and sealed it, without question or charge! It was a second hand scope, user error, and it had been painted OD. On Friday, got a postcard that said to expect the scope back in about two-weeks. If ever their product matches my price point and intended use I'd not hesitate. Likely go used Leupy or try a Redfield nowadays.

medicman1, Thanks. That 4100 yards was the last bunch of the day, dirty barrel, 50-shots downrange. Going to call it good enough.

Mathman, Austrian 6x ehh? That's a cool combo no doubt. I put the Lyman peep back on this one and hopefully can get in enough practice to be good to go... Also dissembled, lubed, scrubbed, and oiled and waxed and dang it cleaned up great - better than new. OT
