there was a discussion about this in the general big game area not long back. Sounded like it depended on your style of hunting. I have been looking at the Filson Whipcords myself but it sounds like the deal are the old military wool pants.

Brian, Both my hunting partners and I use these and like them alot. We used to get them for under 20 bucks a pair and I bought two pairs and had a taylor add a bit to the arse of one to fit me. Larry had german wool first and likes these better. http://go-armynavy.com/index.php/wool-pants/swedish-wool-pants.html I also have a pair of green, lighter weight wool hunting pants , maybe codet, but they tear fairly easy if they get snagged. For very cold weather sitting I wear and Love these. If I could only have one pair it would be these. like wearing blankets

lauren, 40 would work. I'm expanding........ I've been wearing pants, but I guess bibs would work. I've seen some of yours on the classifieds, but the ones I've seen are too small. I'm 6'1" and go around 240 and usually wear 38x32 pants.

keep your eyes on ebay, if you buy bibs go up a size. I usually wear 36, but had to get 38 bibs and they are none too big.

Woolrich 30oz - I use them for sitting hours on end in a tree stand during the whitetail gun season. Latest pair got them on ebay.

I put wool pants on my Christmas list and I believe my wife ordered some from Montana Wollen. I wonder if this pair could be lengthened or if they cut off the hem. I sent the seller a question..... Thanks for the link!

I wear a pair of heavy wool Malones that are maybe 20 years old now, still going strong. Held up by a pair of serious suspenders (and no, no belt too!). An old pair of heavy wool Woolrich bibs get the nod sometimes too.
My all time favorites though are a pair of 1940's vintage red-black plaid Woolrich wool pants that are cut like jodhpurs- roomy in the butt, tapering down to tight at the lower calf, where they lace up like boots, and the wool socks get pulled up over the laces. I've had the waist let out to accomodate middle-age spread. (Cue the fatass jokes!) The reason I don't wear them too much anymore is those darn laces. I can't get in position to tie them anymore, and it's kind of embarrassing to ask my buddy to help me put my pants on!
