Pull trigger and it's just like any other trigger, push trigger forward and it 'sets' the trigger for a lighter pull.
Backwards safety is just that, backwards from what Americans are accustomed to, forward safe, back fire.

Can someone give me the quick and dirty explanation of CZ's "single set trigger" and bassackwards safety?
Thanks. The safety is easy to learn, just work with it before taking it afield. The set trigger is excellent when shooting from a rest; if you don't like it, you can adjust the standard trigger pull to be quite light and remove the set feature. I did this with the CZ set trigger on my 550 in 9.3x62. The 527's are great guns, I just wish McMillan made stocks for them

The trigger can be used traditionally or you can push it forward to "set" it for a very light (under a pound) release.
The safety is "backwards" in that you push it foward to put on safe. Depending on whether you hunt with a "hot" chamber this may or may not be an issue.

Steelhead/Ingwe,
What gain do you get with the AI version over the standard?
Never done an AI, does the 'smith need to cut your loading dies to an AI configuration using the same reamer?
I have an M77 Allweather which is not shooting at the minute and I'm not sure whether to move it on and try something new, or start tinkering...Each way, the outcome may involve moving to the AI version..
Regards,
Peter

Thanks, everyone, for bringing me along. Is it a three-position safety on the CZ?
Normally, I travel to and from my stand on a cold chamber; however, if I am set up and on stand, I will chamber a round at that point. Where I deer hunt, the deer are often close before you see them, and chambering a round at that point would probably scare them off. I haven't hunted coyotes, but my methods would likely be the same.

About 150fps and zero case trimming. I just bought a set of Redding 223 AI dies.

Thanks Scott,
I already have a set of Forster bench rest resizing dies in .223Rem, so I was hoping the 'smith would be able to AI them, or is more trouble than its worth?
Regards,
Peter

Probably more trouble than it's worth; the Redding dies are excellent.

Yep, I believe they are typically hardened after reamed.

The idea behind it being to make an identical rifle to their .375 Ruger African, so that one can practice without the added cost and recoil of the big-bore. Great concept if you ask me.

Agreed, I'd buy one if I can find one. I really like the African Express rifle styling but don't like taking the recoil of true express cartridges day in and day out.

I'm sensing no love for the Savage. Don't the accutrigger and accustock make it at least worthy of consideration? I was thinking that perhaps the accustock is a bit better than a run-of-the-mill factory stock.
Are there any reasons in particular to avoid the Savage?

My next purchase will be a Ruger Hawkeye Ultra Light which weights 6.75 lbs. with 20" 1-9 twist. The Ruger Compact has the 16.5" barrel and weights in at 6.25 lbs. 1/2 pound difference shouldn't be a big deal. Plus the fact that AR's with 1-9 twist have no problems hitting targets at 300 yards.

Steelhead/Ingwe,
What gain do you get with the AI version over the standard?
Peter Pete..I shoot lighter boolits than Steelie most times...53 gr. TSX and 55 gr. Horns. The AI increases performance for me by about 10%..Im getting almost exactly 300 fps more.. In real terms, since I shoot deer with mine...that makes me able to use it with confidence @300 yds.... CoalCracker: There isnt a lot of love for the Savages...though from a practical standpoint ( I sell them...amongst others..) they offer up very little in the way of problems, and a bunch in the way of accuracy..just plain real good shooters...styling and stigma seem to be the issues...which are personal. Also...though I have no way to verify this, I'm not sure how they hold up to a LOT of hard use. ( My remington is on its third barrel...my pards ruger, on its second...thats a bunch of rounds downrange...)

I have heard the 223 is pretty easy on barrels. Randy

The Ruger Ultra Light does look good. However, it looks like it's not available in a stainless version. According to a web search, it looks like the older M77 MKII is available in stainless, but I'm finding a 1:12" ROT.
I could live with blue and walnut, but a stainless/syn would be nice, too.
ingwe, Thanks for your take on the Savage.

Randy I havent worn out an AI Bbl yet either, but again, they are getting used for deer and such...300-400 rounds max in practice in a year....the plain .223s are getting 500-1000 rounds in a good day on the killing fields for gophers or PDs....they dont last long treating them like that.
