This morning I was headed to work. Stopped at a stop sign, I looked to my right just in time to see a guy on a snowmobile headed right for my truck. BAM! Hits my Explorer in both passenger doors. I back up, get out to look at the damage, he pulls around behind my vehicle walks over and says
Him- "I didn't do that. I hit you back there" (pointing behind my rear wheel)
Me- "No sir, there wasn't a dent on it till you hit me...Hey! where do you think you're going?"
Him- speeding off down the road.
Me- "Oh no your not running off now are you?"
So I jumped in the truck, spun around and followed in the direction he went seeing him dwindling to a snow billowing speck.
I called 911 on my way after him, I wasn't going to try to run him down but just keep close enough to follow his tracks and maybe see where he turns off the road into the woods, hopefully.
About 1 mile from the accident scene there he was, in the middle of the road, standing next to his sled. I was still talking to dispatch when I pulled up behind him, they said a DNR Officer was enroute.
I stepped out of the truck and asked him if he stopped or did his machine break down? He said " Blew the belt"
Me- Hhhmmm, so you didn't stop just couldn't get away, ummhhhmm! Well, please don't run, they'll be here in a minute.
Sure enough, about a minute later the DNR truck pulls up. After producing license, registration and proof of insurance I find out Mr. Snocrosser has no drivers license, no registration and no Trail sticker. Hhhmm, what's that on his belt? Ahhh, a tether! Super!
He got a free ride to a warm room and his snowmachine got a ride to the impound lot.
I got to spend all day getting estimates and phone calls with the insurance company.
Nearly $4000 in damage, and I'll be without my truck for a week and a half.
This loser has probably made poor choices his entire life, it was my distinct displeasure to have his path cross mine and bring my into his sphere of ongoing fookups.

Bad life choices, keep those of us in LE gainfully employed. There's no shortage of those who make those choices, and there effects upon others.

If he had broken his neck, you'd (we'd) be paying for that too.

Have to say, I'm surprised I didn't.
Funny though, I just shrugged and figured, what would I get out of it? I'd really hate to be sitting next to him in booking.
Really, I was way more calm than I expected. Maybe the thought that he's in plenty of trouble for fleeing the scene of an accident made me smile inside.
Funny, it turns out his State Identification Card is expired. So he hasn't had a drivers license for at least five years!

So is he going to be responsible to pay for the damage to your vehicle?

That's precisely what went through my mind on reading the OP.

As an aside, I'm curious about something: what sort of license should he have had to legally drive a sled?

Man that sucks. They should at least give you his snowmobile for payment. It probably wasn't even his though.

Count yourself lucky, it only going to cost you 4000 or your insurance company and they will pay for the rental car for the ten days or so. He could have gotten hurt or worst a broken neck and since you have more that he dose, in America these days its automatic, you get to pay or the insurance co. Stupid is as stupid dose. You could try suing him in small claims court. If there was any sort of justice, he would be your slave till the debt is paid in full. But alas we don't do that either.

I vote for this.
I thought you earned some money when you were in jail....??

Yep, but read my reply, tempting but no worth the trouble it'd bring down on me. The satisfaction of seeing his dumb azz
getting a back seat ride was worth it.

In Michigan, someone with multiple DUI's and no license can't operate even a lawn tractor.

Wait!
He's on Parole and out playing in the snow.
And causing $4k in damage to your work vehicle?
Is his PO informed?
Is he going back to jail?
