Sounds like a Walmart or maybe a Gander Mountain employee?

There's a great wealth of info here on "the fire" and unfortunately we often have to weed through a lot of the BS to get to this great info. Not being an ultra long range shooter, I don't know what bullets do at 500 or 1000 yards, nor would I ever care. How in the world can there possibly be any super magical differences in 270/280/30-06
at ranges where the vast majority of hunters shoot? I have used 270,308,30-06 and have never seen any difference in performance out to my max of 250 or so yards. A good friend of mine shoots a 280 and he too, has had great success with it. I would be willing to bet any significant differences would be in
barrel/twist/bullet weight/design/construction.
Compare apples to apples.
Please show me why the 280 is better, so I can run out and trade my deer rifles off and get one of those magical 280's

On the topic of why Remington spec'd the pressure at 60k psi, rather than 65k, perhaps an earlier comment by Bobin is relevant? Was there possibly some concern that people might get ahold of older 7x57's and ream them out to 280?

According to the info I listened to...........280's simply showed enough pressure spikes (pressure variation from shot to shot) to warrant the 60k max.

I am now donning my flameproof suit.......

Gentlemen, there are some things that even a 30-06 can't do!!! But the 280 can!!

For example, my Remington M700CDL 280 Remington shoots factory 280 ammo much better and more accurately than my son's Remington 700CDL 30-06 chambers or even shoots 280 ammo!! So there!!

Nuff said.

I have not kept records of all the barrels I have installed over the last thirty-some years but, on hunting rifles, the 280 has to be one of the most common. 7mm cartridges have always been popular with the custom rifle buyers and the 280 has led the 7mm pack for as long as I have been involved in the business. Occasionally, a new cartridge would take over for a year or so (like the 7 STW)but pretty soon, the popularity of the 280 would re-assert itself.
The truth is, all the 30/06 based and the 57mm cartridges are perfect hunting rounds. They feed well, they perform well and they are all classics. GD

You'd be better served with a 7-08 and that you can't know that either,is fairly funny as well.....................

Lots try to relive their childhood through the JOC chronicles..

if they knew ... last rifle of JOC was a Ruger 77 in : 280 rem.

He died before that rifle was finished;he had two others built by Earl Milliron...............that he never shot anything with....

..280 lovers always cling to that, like it means something.....He was also in his 70's when he built his 280's. I suspect by then he was just bored. smile

His last Stone Sheep was killed with a 270;he also took his last hunt with Jack Atcheson with the 270.....he thought the two cartridges about identical..........you can read all about it.

i have some of his books and we can tell the same about 30-06 ...

If Remington had not brought out out the ".280 on steroids" in 1962......chambered in an affordable, reliable, accurate rifle......the history of the 280 Rem might have been much different.

But they did, and threw a blanket over their fine .280 Rem.

I wish they'd throw dirt over it and the blanket.

Where do you think the 280 would be today had he started out with it instead of the 270. Let's be honest as there really isn't much difference between it, the 270 and a 06, but you can be damn sure it'd be talked about far more by the loyal following that Jack developed. Are there as many "good" bullets today even for the 270 as there are for the 7mm ?
