Here is a pic of my long awaited 6.5 SAUM.

[Linked Image]

and here is a pic of the best of 4 - five shot groups I fired at 100 yards. The 120 ballistic tip was more accurate than the 120 Triple Shock but I've also noticed uncoated barnes bullets don't group as well in my guns when combined with fouling from other bullets types.

Also found this nugget while at the range. Looks like somebody fired a 300 Win Mag in a 300 Weatherby chamber.

Went with he Model Seven McMillan stock but kind of wish I would have gone with the Mountain Rifle pattern.

Anyway, here are the colors.

o 40% Med Grey
o 30% Med. Green
o 20% Black
o 10% Light Tan

Here's the rifle specs.

22.5 Inch Pacnor SS Super Match Barrel
6.5 x 300 SAUM
 # 3 contour, 3 groove, 1 in 9 twist, 2 inch shank
 Sako extractor
 Tubb LW Firing Pin
 Tuff Coat Black Matte
 Tubb Recoil Lug

Leupold VXIII-4.5-14X40 with Talley LWs.

Weighs 7lbs 9.2 ozs.

It had a Timney trigger but I had to send it back to the factory so now I'm using a recall replaced Model 600 trigger.

EEEK! Very much bad...

Coulda been worse - we had a dingbat down here last year go the other way; Wby in a Win.Mag. BOOOOM! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

How he got the bolt to close the first time, we still haven't figured out. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

How we got the bolt open and the cartridge out of what was left involved a vise, some wrenches, and a couple of hammers... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

I cannot say I'm disappointed and it was a somewhat windy day but I have a factory barrelled (restocked and bedded) 7mm SAUM Model Seven SS and a totally factory 300 SAUM Model 700 SS that shoot at least as well and cost me quite a bit less money.

I also got a little excessive case bulge around the area that you would have head separation on overworked brass. These were brand new cases so this has me a little concerned and I'm not happy with the way the follower is working (not working) right now.

I'm thinking the bulge might be a little pronounced because of actually having too light of a powder charge (as I could be anywhere from 2-8 grains of H4831SC under my guestimated max charge). The worst case was the first one fired on a clean and lightly oiled barrel. As powder charges increased the bulge issue might have gotten better, it certainly didn't get any worse.

Maybe I'm being anal as this is my first true custom gun but when paying as much money as I did and waiting almost a year for it, I really wanted things to be close to perfect.

I really like the looks and feel of the gun though.

7SAUM,

I think you'll be quite happy with the new rifle, looks like you spec'd her well (obviously, she can shoot!)

What chores or duties you have in mind for this fine rig? Mountain or pack duty?

Hmmm... That case looks like the .300 WinWby Miscue, one of the Errant Magnums some seem to be promoting. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Sweet Rig.

I like the 600 action. How many rounds can it hold in its belly?

So, you used a Model 7 pattern stock for a 600 action. It isn't a simple drop-in, is it? Aren't there some modifications necessary to change from the 7 to the 600/660?
I'm asking because I have a 660 that I would like to re-stock in synthetic. I see you stuck with the blind mag. Does MacMillan allow for conversion from blind to floorplate in a 600/660?

The rig will primarily be used for Texas whitetails and hogs or mule deer in the Rockies. It would probably make a very nice sheep or caribou rifle as well.

It holds 2 in the belly and 1 in the chamber.

I'm not an expert on McMillan stocks and the gunsmith actually sent this one to their factory where they did an awesome job of pillar bedding and inletting. I believe McMillan has the proper computer program to inlet Model 600s/700s to a wide variety of their stock patterns. I could have easily had a Mountain Rifle or Classic Pattern inletted for the 600/660. This isn't like B&C Model Seven inletted stocks that "can be made" to fit Model 600s. The McMillans would most likely be drop-in assuming your gave them the correct specs. You should also be able to specify BDL or ADL design but I don't know if you can use Model Seven bottom metal (drop down floorplate) for a 600 but I felt the ADL design was better than the BDL with the original plastic floorplate.

McMillan removed the front half of my rear pillar on the 600 to allow for the tight fit of the trigger/safety. When I bedded another McMillan to a Model Seven I only used a pillar in the front and no pillar in the rear because of the shorter tang and didn't want to grind down the pillar. This isn't a problem with Model 700s though and will probably used a ground down rear pillar when bedding future Model Sevens, 673s and 600s.

I had Rick order me a McMillan inletted for a 600 to be used with an aftermarket aluminum copy of the original plastic bottom but w/o the drop down floorplate it's probably just as good and possibly cheaper to go with the ADL design.

I like your choices on this rig very much. I think that the SAUM case is a bit more practical choice than the more commonly used WSM case. I'm also a big fan of the 6.5mm bore and also of shorter barrels. Two of my rifles are built on 600's and I have another action sitting waiting for a project to present itself.

Re: The feeding thing........getting the correct follower and box combo seems to be the key. I'd think that a SAUM combo would be the answer rather than tweaking about with the original that it came with. When working with my 6.5x284 on a 600, I found that the std box with a magnum follower was the ticket. Of course the SAUM case is fatter so you might need the more open box from an SAUM.

Can you get a follower for a 284 case? Would it work for a 40 deg Imp 308 case?

7Saum,

I just today picked up a Remmy M-7 SS in .300 Saum. I bought it with the specific intent to do pretty much what you did to your M-600. I hope to be sending it to Pac-Nor this fall for a new barrel (6.5 SAUM). What is the muzzle diameter of your #3? Do you know if it is possible to get it fluted? I am thinking of a 8" or 8.5" twist. Mostly because I have no intention of shooting anything less than 125 Gr. bullets. I am really more interested in shooting heavier bullets.

What is the turn-around time from Pac-nor? TIA;

Looks like a great rifle and a the cartridge has to be a rocket, I just wish you had used a model seven instead. Those 600/660 are getting hard to find and expensive.

9.3,

My smith used a PacNor tube for this. I did not send it to PacNor. PacNor did a 338-06 Ackley for me about a year ago and I believe they were right about the estimated 12 weeks but they did some stock work on my gun as well. I think they do barrel only work in about 8 weeks.

The gun pictured above took about a year and that is why I have a slightly sour attitude about an otherwise very fine shooting and nice looking gun.

Jim,

The gun is currently at a different smith than the original builder getting some work done on the follower and possibly the feed rails. The original smith put another style magnum follower in that is flatter/different than a normal remington follower. In fact, I put a Model 673 Magnum follower in and it was an improvement but still not satisfactory. Since the originial gun was a standard model 600 and not magnum, I think the feed rails might need to be machined for this to work as expected with a fatter SAUM case.

brasskeeper,

I'm a big fan of Model 600s and Sevens but after having a few custom/semi custom projects under my belt I really like Model 700s for the platform of my future rifle projects. Parts are easier to find and pillar bedding is a little easier as the tang is big enough so the rear pillar does not contact the rear of the safety.

The follower from the 6.5 RM family is what works best with my two 284 based rifles. One is in a std 600 box, the other is a Wyatt's. (which, btw didn't work for beans until we bent some lips into the thing)

I have my 6.5 SAUM up and running but haven`t had the health lately to get out and shoot. Pneumonia and flu got me. As soon as it warms up a bit I`ll go out and get some range time in. If I can figure out the picture thing I`ll post a picture of mine. Not as pretty as yours though.LOL

What is the case capacity of the 6.5 SAUM compared to 6.5-284?
