Well said, my sentiments exactly. My model 70 300RUM killed a bunch of stuff including truckloads of bait animals for Leopard hunters in Africa and was still shooting well when I sold it with a round count in the 1500 range. Barrel gets REAL hot after only 3 rounds and I sold mine not because of barrel wear or recoil but because of its noise level. No, no muzzle brake (HATE 'em) just a really noisy round in my opinion. Great killer for sure, though.

Built one a while back for a customer that punched paper with VLD'S, it made it about 900 rounds! It will now become a 300WSM with a throat for 210's.

Blagg, whereabouts in Eastern Oregon are you? Always looking for a good gunsmith out in these parts.

Accuracy puking, can be induced by a host of variables after a few boxes, none of which is the barrel being shot out.

Sendero's jump around horribly in their stocks(pull it apart and look at the skid marks on the receiver's underside),the Ultra bumps enough to tax scope/base/rings and the shooter. NPT's are soft and will foul wonderously.

The rifle never had a chance to shine...which is of course very typical.............

Now that I have read a few of his posts, most make sense, gotta agree with him. A 30-378 WBY will last longer than a few boxes. My last 300 RUM...and I mean the last I will own was still belching 210s into bug holes after 800+ rounds.

Another RUM or are you looking elsewhere?................

The 300 RUM shines with the 180's at 3350 in a Stainless Sendero.

Sticks advise on the action jumping around is spot on.

I bed the action, float the magazine box, heavily deburr the mag box and the inside corners of the floor plate that accepts the mag box.

I torque the screws to 80 inch pounds in the front and 60 in the rear, and they will get loose, eventually.

I shoot a Vias muzzle break and always wear electronic ear muffs at the range and in the field. Even with a Vias muzzle break, recoil is substantial enough to move the scope in the rings.

Sub 3/4" groups at 100 are normal with my rifle, and it wears a 4-16 on it.

Even with a Vias muzzle break, this gun is still no fun to shoot, you really have watch your bench technique on how much you grip the gun and how much you pull the rifle into your shoulder, etc to get small groups.

Most people will develop a flinch or a tendency to "slap" the trigger, raise their head up of the stock anticipating recoil, or jerk their entire body in anticipation of recoil of this cartridge.

I shoot the 7 Mag with 162 A-Max at 3100 with a Vias muzzle break(recoil of a light loaded 243) much better than I do the 300 RUM..all due to the amount of recoil.

I think that a guy should have a serious reason for shooting a cartridge of this intensity, like brown bears.

Barrel is longer too, action is longer, there's less COAL latitude to dabble BC,they're heavier, burn more powder, kick harder, are more expensive to feed and won't Agg as well.

A whole multitude of braggin' rights inherent................(grin)

That's 'cause he insists on shooting all his bullets while his shoulder is still numb, before it starts twitching. wink
