I hate to steer this back to the topic but I need some advice regarding a Model build. I am working on a stainless Model 7, using and AWR stock, the gun has an aftermarket trigger already and I am re barreling in .250 savage. I am looking to upgrade the bottom metal, Oberndorf style if possible either in stainless, aluminum, or I would nickle plate a chrome moly steel unit. An advice on sources?

Perhaps I am confusing AWR with the KS. I will double check my invoice, bought it from Remington.

Having never had a rifle in either chambering or much less hunting with one, if you had a choice which would it be and why?

Orphaned,

I ran a M7 in 7mm-08 for 5 years or so; it was my main blacktail rifle and I killed a fair number with it at ranges from 15 to about 80 yards.

While I won't say I was UNhappy with it, after one nice buck ran forever after a good double-lung hit I decided to try something else. I had Pac-Nor retube it to .358, cut to 20", and I opened up the barrel channel on my laminate stock for the bigger barrel. It's no flyweight but balances great and feels perfect in my hands. I love that rifle.

As to terminal performance I've now killed 8-9 deer with .358 and you simply can't ask for anything better. It flat HAMMERS them, doesn't bloodshot meat, and is easier on the ears than 7-08.

Did I mention it hammers them? smile

I've used 3 different bullets. I'm of the opinion that the 225-gn Partition is the best all-around bullet for a short-action .358; good terminal effects and a good BC, which makes .358 a legit 400-yd cartridge. However if you really are holding it to 150 yards the 200-gn Hornady Spire Point is a fantastic deer bullet. I don't know how it'd do on a 400-lb hog though.

I see you thread has turned ugly and that's too bad. I'm going to say one more thing and it's not meant to provoke, though it is provocative.... It's my opinion that for short to mid-range hunting, say out to 200 yards or so, the .358 is the "highest and best" use of the .308 parent case. It's the most efficient. It hits like a freight train. It does so while being meat-friendly. It short- it totally kicks ASS! grin

Good luck on your build!!

Also- you can really help the balance on a laminate M7 by hollowing the buttstock. And, using the forward end of the comb (nose) on a M7 stock as a visual reference as to how far back the scope is mounted, is a mistake that this crowd has made more'n once. It's an odd stock that way. The nose is much further forward than, say, a Mountain LSS stock. Got a pic sitting in my photobucket account to prove it. wink
