It does my heart good to see trapping acknowledged at all.

I wish I had taken a BUNCH of trapping pics but that was all mostly before digital. Fact is, I never carried a camera whilst trapping. To damn much other stuff to do and very little light to do it in.

That's what I was thinking. You'd better have a couple dozen of those Havalon knives handy!

I would take up trapping.

I would also use a flintlock and grow a huge beard.

Maybe that will be my retirement. grin

Jim Rearden's books tell some stories of various trappers who lived off the land in Alaska. Lots of them nearly died in various mishaps, too. There was the chap, Slim Carlson, who had his cabin suddenly catch on fire, and had to get out with only his underwear, dogs, and a rifle. After the fire died he drove a dog sled eight miles in just his long underwear, in -12 weather toanother cabin. He had various degrees of frostbite, but barely managed to avoid freezing his privates. He told Rearden if it had been 30 or 40 below, he would have probably just shot himself.

That is a damned, damned hard life, even if you enjoy trapping, and they had to do it, or starve. I'll pass.

TFF kid, are you for real? That's good stuff lol!!

Really it is.

Just jump into it, get yourself a few bucket sets with conibear traps, it aint that hard. It's just like everything else, just tear into it and learn from your prey.

you got weasels? they aint hard to trap.

Way cool pics! When I was in high school and college, I trapped and coon hunted every fall. Lived on a farm and helped Dad raise hogs. When fur prices were good in the early 70's, the money I made at that time paid for about 1/3 of my college education.

Those pics remind me skinning, scraping, and stretching a whole lot of critters: red fox, gray fox, muskrats, mink, coons, beaver, and a few coyotes. Don't think I'd want to do it today.

[quote=Ken Howell]Mentioned that once to a gun-writer friend (Montana horseman) who heartily endorsed it.

He and a Pard had thought that they'd like to cross the States a-horseback from Canada to Mexico. They rode the Montana-Idaho line to Wyoming, where they eagerly sold their horses and gear.

They flat couldn't DO IT but still would've liked to HAVE DONE IT all the way.

I don't doubt it, that is as rough a country as you will find.
