Always have and always will wear bluejeans hunting. Sometimes they are covered up by insulated coveralls, but most times not.
I once read on the internet that you can get worms in your brain eating at Taco Bell. I think that falls in the same catagory as wearing bluejeans hunting.
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost....

I have done it in the PAST!!! But I swear I will NEVER do it again!! Varmintguy says it is WRONG!! It scares the DEER!! He also says I don't use enough exclamation points in my posts!!! Can you IMAGINE!!!! From now on I will wear jeans only when FISHING!! Ive done it as well. I have also worn Liberty overalls with a camo jacket, the overalls are very comfortable IMO. I have a couple pair of the Wrangler camo jeans and really like them as well.
The scientific name for an animal that doesn't either run from or fight its enemies is lunch.

I wear blue jeans when hunting because I like to scare the animals out of the bushes and shoot them on the run. More sporting that way, no matter what VG says!

I wear blue jeans 365 days of the year. Three things are true about me hunting in blue jeans. 1- I hunted in them last year 2- I hunted in them this year and 3- I'll hunt in them next year. However they are dangerous. Anybody who has ever worn blue jeans while hunting will eventually die.

Jeans rule, but what do I know I'm old. I got a lecture this fall from a guy who has way too much money( he suffers from the belief that being rich makes him smart about all things) he was dressed from head to toe in the latest high tech trendy stuff and seemed to feel sorry for me because I was so stupid to hunt elk in Levis and a stetson.

We have color vision but most game animals have traded color vision for improved night vision. So wearing blue trousers makes no difference.
But when it's cold and wet and you have only an unheated tent to return to, denim blue jeans can be miserable.

I like the Kudu too. Thanks. When I told my PH I really liked uniqueness, he joked about the bull that had not been spotted for 2 years on a 20,000 hectacre property. It took us 2 days but we found him. I was estatic and my PH had bragging rights with the other PHs. He will be right next to this buck I killed back in high school. Only in designer jeans. Levis and Wranglers are so low brow. Do you prefer the plain pockets of Dolce & Gabbanna or the gold stitching available on True Religion brand jeans? I dig Armani, for the name cachet, but I gotta admit that Ralph Lauren jeans look good in photos with dead elk. I'm seeing posts from dry country. Here's an invitation to typical off road elk hunting on the Olympic Penninsula: On any day of the WA State general elk season, wear jeans and join me in a jaunt from the ridge top road down to the Matheny River and back. We'd do it in two hours. That MIGHT influence the choice of clothes for a second such trip, but probably not: reality has no cred on the internet! Added: I love jeans and have shot quite a bit of game while wearing them. A rule of thumb: if a climate is dry enough to grow pine, jeans will do in most weather.

not uncommon for me to wear jeans or better yet a pair of key imperial bibs when hunting decent weather and/ or close to home...
i do like my wools for the cold stuff though...

Was guiding a bowhunt on the plains earlier this year and my hunter was shocked when I wore blue jeans. He was not a happy hunter as we began our stalk and I hadnt put camo on. Long story short, he missed the buck at 22 yards and did not offer any more criticism on my wardrobe the rest of the hunt

and i been doing most of my coyote calling in white tyvek coveralls... i wear a pair of synthetic thermals underneath, and a fleece sweater with 2 zip pockets for my wallet and stuff...
pretty windproof, halfway waterproof, and cheap...
i get 2-3 days use per pair, generally, if i avoid the multiflora rose...

Jeans are about all I wear anyway. I HAVE been dragged (kicking and screaming) into more expensive jeans as of late, but typically wear the same jeans hunting, on motorcycles, and out to decent places. I think I have an allergy to khakis.

Drummond hunsonora, the issue isn't camo or color for us wet coasters who usually eschew jeans for serious hunting -- it is wet. Forget the jeans, I don't even wear cotton skivvies for hunting wet country!

I own lots of jeans, in lots of dark colors (wearing dark brown
Carhartt's today). I wear the new ones as everyday wear and the old/faded ones for outside work and hunting (also own a couple of pair of Wrangler camo jeans just for hunting.) I like the camo and dark colors when stump sitting or sitting on an open platform in a tree. If I am going to hunt in an enclosed tower stand or ground blind then the color doesn't make any difference.

That is the more important question I would like to hear a coherent answer to why a Hunter would wear bright blue jeans AND a camouflage upper garment?
Simple. If you're hunting in tall grass or brush, you're upper body is exposed and you need a camo top. You're legs are hidden by the tall grass or brush. If you're not hunting in tall grass or brush, it dosen't matter because the game animals don't read internet forums that tell them to be afraid of blue jeans. I only wear blue jeans if I'm wearing pants.
Otherwise I'm the buck-naked savage with spear and flintknife running game in the night, giving them a fair chase---but only with one leg tied up--and hoping--otherwise it wouldn't be fair.

the issue isn't camo or color for us wet coasters who usually eschew jeans for serious hunting -- it is wet. Forget the jeans, I don't even wear cotton skivvies for hunting wet country! I'm the same way. It's not the color that's the problem I just don't find jeans or cotton to be very comfortable to hunt in. I grew up in the southwest wearing nothing but Wranglers and they worked just fine there but here in south Louisiana I don't wear jeans much at all. During bow season it's still hot and humid sweatin your a$$ off and the cotton soaks it all up and doesn't dry out so I wear my regular work pants that are a poly blend. Then practically overnight it turns damp cold through the winter and I like to wear loose fitting clothes so I can layer up easier. I find regular old Army BDU's to be about the most comfortable and practical clothes to hunt in for the rest of the season.

If wearing jeans with a camo jacket is a fashion sin, VarmintGuy should be happy to know that I killed my biggest mule deer ever while wearing blue jeans AND a blue-denim jacket. The buck was so frightened that I got to look him over for a couple of minutes before shooting him as he fed at just about 200 yards.
Maybe it worked because I was standing half-behind a dead pine on a low ridge, so my blue clothes blended perfectly with the Big Sky of Montana.
I did wear a brown hat, however.

I think maybe Mule Deer is onto the start of the next big camo trend. Look at it this way. If you start with a new pair of blue jeans and a denim jacket, the trick is to find how many times to wash them and what with to match the color of your local variant of blue sky. You will have to experiment to find your own secret formula. When you get that done go get the biggest white cowboy hat you can find. You wear this getup and hunt on only the skyline of ridges. That way you blend totally with the sky and are invisible. The white hat will look like a small cloud just over the horizon. Call this Blue Ridgeline Cloud camo. We can modify this if we look at Jamison�s photo in his post above. Get a bit lighter hooded sweat shirt to replace the denim jacket, ditch the red and you become just a little bigger cloud on the horizon. Since Ingwe has already pointed out that the deer are going to be running like mad to escape the blue sky, they will see the little cloud of the Blue Ridgeline outfit and head for it as the nearest cover from the blue sky.

My invitation to take a jaunt into the Matheny canyon in late Oct. or Nov. is still open: road to river and back, easily doable in a morning. I can all but guarantee it will be above freezing, probably well above, though it might be cold enough to have some snow. You wear jeans, and tell us all after the trip if they are still your first choice for such a hunt in those temps. We can have lunch at the Quinault Lodge after, or eat with a view of the ocean at Kalaloch. If you haven't experienced boggy swamp on a steep slope, you are in for a treat! No serious guff here, but it would be a fun excercise.

I like blue jeans because I can work and play without having to change. Saves on the wordrobe cost.
I been wearing blue jeans and blue denim wool lined jackets while hunting for over 30 years. Black baseball cap however.

For me it's not the camo aspect of it, but the material like others have said. I can't stay warm enough in jeans and the cotton absorbs water. I have some other material pants I prefer to wear and they happen to be camo. Although the closest I ever had a buck to me on the ground I was wearing a mid 60's full length RED snowmobile suit. Thing never knew I was there until my arrow went wizzing over his back! haha

I remember a caribou hunt I did in the NWT a few years ago. Most of the guys were completely dressed in camo Gore-Tex, teh type with fuzz on the outside to make the stuff quieter.
I wore the same sort of Gore-Tex jacket, but also wore jeans. If it started to rain I pulled on real rain-pants, because I have learned the hard way that Gore-Tex isn't worth a damn if you have to sit or crawl on wet caribou moss.
The guys in miracle-fiber pants came dragging in every day, the fuzz on the outside of their Gore-Tex pants completely soaked, making the pants weigh at least 10 pounds. In fact many of them looked like gangbangers, with their pants hangin' low.
Meanwhile I was in dry, comfortable Carhartts!

All the way west? Carhartts, the heavy duty ones, or I have some Colombia pants made of a similar "canvas"-type fabric. Stop bramble thorns much better, and shed water a little better too if the underbrush is damp. Denim, especially old denim, offers almost no resistance to thorns and plus it soaks up water like a fargin' sponge. I love it when the weather let's me wear cotton, but I can do better than jeans. I mostly wore thin capilene under the canvas Colombia's up elk hunting this last season. Lacking moisture cotton is awesome stuff and the capilene helps a bunch if you do get wet from dew on the brush or the like. Now in NM, which has areas much like the Montana and Wyoming pics here, we wore jeans all the time and didn't really think twice about it.

Thats not a boat dock I'm standing on....it's a homemade raft that I made 6 river crossings on wearing blue jeans...I'm probably lucky to be alive...NWT's South Nahanni River, September 1991. Dude, If that's the raft in the Moose story you told me, I have to say you must be insane! : ) Very cool picture though.

I've never hunted in anything but jeans. If its really cold, the carhartts get put on. If its really wet, I stay inside.

Great pics Pat and great story MD +1. Used to be Levi's but now strictly Carhartts. They come in different weights and hold up well, have about 10 pair. That and the Puma lounge pants is it. Lightweight raingear if it's raining which is mostly a rarity here.

I go with either Carharrts or Wranglers, depending on conditions. Like those heavy Carhartts for pushing through rosebushes when hunting birds in NE Montana!

Double front dungarees are the ticket. Great for packin' concrete forms, but alot more fun walkin' brush for roosters! Yeah, I have a pair of Filson waxed-canvas BLEEPS for hard-core brush hunting.
They also work great, when layered in Sno-Seal, for horseback in rain or snow, about the only real use I've found for Sno-Seal. They're getting a little ratty after a decade or so of use, but still work OK.

This thread is bring back some memories.
When I moved to SE AK 9 years ago, a CG buddy invited me to tag along on a deer hunting trip. I wore blue jeans. 5 miles in; he kills a deer. Blue jeans were soaked. The 5 miles out were rather miserable..(grin)

Soaked jeans are miserable- or worse!
Wet Carhartts are much better in that they are baggy enough and stiff enough to at least stand out from the skin... but still sucky for wet stuff.
I really have no use for jeans in the western Oregon woods in anything other than dry conditions.

Ha! You guys just culled all the blue-color blind critters that also can't hear the jeans rustling noise in the brush..by the way guides wear jeans as a way to secretly limit harvest and keep the big ones on the run..so they can put on wool or fleece and get them later in the season. It's called the GC (guide con); the white Stetson hats are part of it.

JB, funny you mention Filson, I was just looking at their website a day or two ago. Looks like good quality, plus it's not all camo'd out. Sam, as JB said, you've got to be careful when choosing Filson stuff. Didn't used to be that way-------as much. A fast method is to just watch for USA in the product description, but an even better approach is to support your local clothing store that allows you to finger the clothing. When you hit a "real" Filson quality, you'll know it.

90% of the days I hunt it's raining and even the few days its not the brush is still wet so I wear the only waterproof pants I have and there camo. Most of the time I hunt yotes in the summer, I wear jeans but not the rest of the year.

Sainte.... orange for geese? Ducks? Really? Thats one of the anal things about camo... for birds like waterfowl and turkeys... I still wear it.camo that is... I do a lot of jump-shooting waterfowl and the season overlaps with deer rifle season here. It makes it a little harder to stalk up on them but it is better than being plugged by some idiot with a .30-.30.

Some more blue jean "Hunters" - on display!
Heres a real insight into the mentality/expertise of "blue jeanie" type Hunters!
I was so "impressed" with these three "blue jeanie" Hunters that I waited for the next opportunity and made a copy of the Televison show the "blue jeanies" were FEATURED on!
The show was last weeks epsiode of "Hooked On Utah"!
There were three main "characters" on this episode - all three of the main "characters" were "blue jeanies" and showed up for this "Hunt" wearing BLUE JEANS!
There were two others along for the "Hunt" (they did not carry firearms) and they wore full camoflaged outfits as they filmed the "blue jeanies".
"Blue jeanie" number 1 was the husband of "blue jeanie" number 2 who was the "Huntress" of Elk that day!
Also along for the "ride" was "blue jeanie" number 3 - he was the father of "blue jeanie" number 2!
And when I say "along for the ride" I mean ALONG FOR THE RIDE!
"Blue jeanie number 1, number 2 and number 3 were NEVER seen walking or stalking during the Elk Hunt!
The "blue jeanies" rode (constantly!) around in a "blue jeanie special" - a four passenger motorized vehicle!
Again NOT ONCE were any of the "blue jeanies" ever seen away from the vehicle or standing anywhere but on a road!
Finally the "blue jeanies" spot a mosnter Bull Elk at 527 yards!
"Blue jeanie" #1 exits the motorized vehicle and declares "we are gonna put the hammer down on this Bull"
I only wish that bragadocio had been true!
"Blue jeanie" #1 departs the seat of the motorized vehicle and sets up a tripod for "blue jeanie" #2. "blue jeanie" #2 proceeds to fire away at the trophy Elk (at 527 yards!) with a 25/06 Rifle that she is VERY unfamiliar with!
In fact once "blue jeanie" #2 is out of bullets, and the Bull is still standing but wounded, she asks her husband to "reload the Rifle for me"!
The camera now cuts away and when it comes back "blue jeanie" #1 has set up an auxilary (second) tripod for "blue jeanie" #2!
Blue jeanie" #2 now has two tripods to rest her Rifle on!
And she is NOW shooting a 300 Remington Ultra Mag at the Elk. The hapless bull is 527 yards away and still standing wounded now for sure though!
"Blue jeanie" #2 starts firing the big iron - with a noticeable flinch I might add!
In all I observed "blue jeanie" #2 fire 7 rounds at the Elk which began at 527 yards and the range increased OVER TIME!
"Blue jeanie" #1 alluded to at least ONE other round being fired at the hapless Elk whilst the camera was off!
At one point late in the barrage of fire "blue jeanie" #2 pleads with "blue jeanie" #1 to "shoot the Elk for her"!
A sadder state of affairs I do not believe I have EVER seen on film!!!
The cameras cut away again and resumes with "blue jeanie" #1 again bragging "we put the hammer down on that Bull"!
Again I only wish that had been the case!
The cameras cut away and pick up with "blue jeanies" #1, #2 and #3 "riding" to the Elk in their motorized vehicle!
And now it becomes clear that the Elk is on the inside of a HIGH FENCE as the motorized vehicle carrying "blue jeanies" #1, #2 and #3 has driven along it for some distance.
"Blue jeanie" Hunter heaven this for sure - Elk inside a high fence!
True "blue jeanies" endorsers to the end, the camerapeople simply can not let the show end without ONE MORE bragadocio from "blue jeanie" #1 - he ends the show with a third emphatic boast "we put the hammer down on that Bull"!
Not only was "blue jeanie" #1 INCORRECT in that oft repeated and stupid boast he was ill mannered and unsportsmanlike as well!
The Elk appeared to me to be an enhanced growth type bull inside that private ranch with the high fence scoring "over 400 B&J ("blue jeanie"!) points" - still I wish it had come to a quicker and less offensive fate!
All in all a great example for other "blue jeanies" everywhere - wouldn't you say?

Hunting shows are a joke 99% of the time, no matter what the "hunters" in question are wearing. If you replaced the blue jeans with whatever else you find acceptable would the show have been any less bad? All in all a great example for other "blue jeanies" everywhere - wouldn't you say?

VarmintGuy Blaming their questionable ethics and hunting style on the pants they wore is the same as blaming it on the 25-06 she was shooting. I personally wear different pants in different conditions. When hunting Eastern Montana in dry weather I wear blue jeans, when hunting high country elk in bad weather I wear wool. I am not suddenly a bad hunter those times I decide indigo canvas is best, or suddenly a mature wise hunter when I wear wool. Like the other guy said, you paint with a pretty broad brush. With the way you jump to conclusions based on one article of clothing, I'd hate to have you do my job interview. John

Haven't read the entire thread, but it seems like some think there's some taboo about wearing jeans when deer hunting? I've got about 30 years worth of dead deer that say otherwise. I finally broke down and bought a pair of Realtree camo jeans, but wouldn't hesitate to go blue again. If you spot the deer before they see you, it's game over. Plain and simple.

Finally the "blue jeanies" spot a mosnter Bull Elk at 527 yards!
"Blue jeanie" #1 exits the motorized vehicle and declares "we are gonna put the hammer down on this Bull"
I only wish that bragadocio had been true!
"Blue jeanie" #1 departs the seat of the motorized vehicle and sets up a tripod for "blue jeanie" #2. "blue jeanie" #2 proceeds to fire away at the trophy Elk (at 527 yards!) with a 25/06 Rifle that she is VERY unfamiliar with!
In fact once "blue jeanie" #2 is out of bullets, and the Bull is still standing but wounded, she asks her husband to "reload the Rifle for me"!
The camera now cuts away and when it comes back "blue jeanie" #1 has set up an auxilary (second) tripod for "blue jeanie" #2!
Blue jeanie" #2 now has two tripods to rest her Rifle on!
And she is NOW shooting a 300 Remington Ultra Mag at the Elk. The hapless bull is 527 yards away and still standing wounded now for sure though!
"Blue jeanie" #2 starts firing the big iron - with a noticeable flinch I might add!
In all I observed "blue jeanie" #2 fire 7 rounds at the Elk which began at 527 yards and the range increased OVER TIME!
"Blue jeanie" #1 alluded to at least ONE other round being fired at the hapless Elk whilst the camera was off!
At one point late in the barrage of fire "blue jeanie" #2 pleads with "blue jeanie" #1 to "shoot the Elk for her"!
A sadder state of affairs I do not believe I have EVER seen on film!!!
The cameras cut away again and resumes with "blue jeanie" #1 again bragging "we put the hammer down on that Bull"!
Again I only wish that had been the case!
The cameras cut away and pick up with "blue jeanies" #1, #2 and #3 "riding" to the Elk in their motorized vehicle!
And now it becomes clear that the Elk is on the inside of a HIGH FENCE as the motorized vehicle carrying "blue jeanies" #1, #2 and #3 has driven along it for some distance.
"Blue jeanie" Hunter heaven this for sure - Elk inside a high fence!
True "blue jeanies" endorsers to the end, the camerapeople simply can not let the show end without ONE MORE bragadocio from "blue jeanie" #1 - he ends the show with a third emphatic boast "we put the hammer down on that Bull"!
Not only was "blue jeanie" #1 INCORRECT in that oft repeated and stupid boast he was ill mannered and unsportsmanlike as well!
The Elk appeared to me to be an enhanced growth type bull inside that private ranch with the high fence scoring "over 400 B&J ("blue jeanie"!) points" - still I wish it had come to a quicker and less offensive fate!
All in all a great example for other "blue jeanies" everywhere - wouldn't you say?

Some more blue jean "Hunters" - on display!
Heres a real insight into the mentality/expertise of "blue jeanie" type Hunters!
I was so "impressed" with these three "blue jeanie" Hunters that I waited for the next opportunity and made a copy of the Televison show the "blue jeanies" were FEATURED on!
The show was last weeks epsiode of "Hooked On Utah"!
There were three main "characters" on this episode - all three of the main "characters" were "blue jeanies" and showed up for this "Hunt" wearing BLUE JEANS!
There were two others along for the "Hunt" (they did not carry firearms) and they wore full camoflaged outfits as they filmed the "blue jeanies".
"Blue jeanie" number 1 was the husband of "blue jeanie" number 2 who was the "Huntress" of Elk that day!
Also along for the "ride" was "blue jeanie" number 3 - he was the father of "blue jeanie" number 2!
And when I say "along for the ride" I mean ALONG FOR THE RIDE!
"Blue jeanie number 1, number 2 and number 3 were NEVER seen walking or stalking during the Elk Hunt!
The "blue jeanies" rode (constantly!) around in a "blue jeanie special" - a four passenger motorized vehicle!
Again NOT ONCE were any of the "blue jeanies" ever seen away from the vehicle or standing anywhere but on a road!
