I am not too keen on Taurus revolvers. But don't they make a long barreled revolver in 22 hornet?? You might also want to look for a Marlin 1894 in 218 Bee, which is basically the same as a Hornet. Tom.

A very light action that can handle small centerfire cartridges is the Remington 580-590 family. I have seen them converted to centerfire cartridges up to the 221 Fireball. I haven't seen a mag-fed centerfire conversion, but it could be done if the cartridge is short enough.

They occasionally come up for sale here in Canada but at a very high price. I have an M6 and really like it but it isn't a repeater and has the 410 nbarrel to clutter things up http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/default/smirk.gif

Anyway I'd love to have an ultralight 3.5 pound 22 Hornet repeater with an 18.5" barrel, and folding stock. I'd put a 1-10" twist ulralight barrel on it and fire 60 grain Partitions at 2200 for a great small game/ survival hiker.

Questions...what small action choices would be usable for this project that could be obtained at a good price and is very light. I'd prefer something scaled for the Hornet and not scaled for the .223.

I'd rather have a Montucky 223AI(and do),than a Hornet or K-Hornet(which I do as well)....................

A Sako 78 in a light stock might also work.

The M4s were built on a modified rimfire action and weren't made to hold up and be shot alot.

An H&R 157 mannlicher stocked topper would be light, but being a single shot a person would have be sure of his shot if he was needing to kill something for food.

A baby rolling block would be short and light, but still a single shot.

I'm almost thinking a bolt 7.62x39 rifle would work and approach the weight target. Use FMJ's for practice and small game, use soft points for deer and caribou. Ruger and CZ both have the rifles.

I don't do blind magazines, so the Montanas don't work for me.

To the OP:

Savage has a 6.9 pound 4-shot mag Model 25 Walking Varmint in .22 Hornet that could be put on a diet like Jim62 described.

Bob the barrel back to 16.1 inches. Carve away large parts of the stock; mod it to a sliding folder.

I, too, think a .22 Mag would be an OK foraging round.

For the reloaders who feel that way, Savage is supposed to be bringing out two different Model 25s in 5.7x28mm.

This tiny cartridge, basically a centerfire .22 Magnum, is going to be deer-legal in Tennessee.

Reckon a 45 gr. TSX at 1,900 FPS would kill a deer, though.

Savage even made some single shot 93s in 22 Hornet for a short while, but I sure don't think that it is a strong enough action to shoot a lot.

Wouldn't a Ruger 77 Hornet, chopped barrel, and some type of shoehorned folding stock meant for a 10/22, work?

It is likely that, since we are very different people, an optimal solution for you might well be a suboptimal solution for me. I prefer hinged floorplates to blind magazines whenever that is a viable option. DF-DS.

I love the Ruger 77/22 Hornet's,but they ain't light.

A guy could suffer a lightweight 10/22 build with a folder.

I do.................(grin)

I've never had a mechanical issue with a blind mag,but cain't say that in regards to floorplates or DBM's...................
