Johannesburg - The owner of a safari business, his wife and a professional hunter are among the "masterminds" who have been arrested in connection with rhino poaching.

Dawie Groenewald, 42, the wealthy driving force behind Out of Africa Adventurous Safaris in Polokwane, his wife, Sariette, 34, and Tielman Erasmus, a professional hunter, are behind bars.

They were arrested on Monday along with Dr Karel Toet and Dr Manie du Plessis, two veterinarians from Modimolle, and Toet's wife, Marisa.

Groenewald, a former police official, was suspended from the South African Professional Hunters Association four years ago, and Zimbabwean authorities put a stop to his hunting there.

He was arrested in the US in April this year in connection with a leopard trophy which was illegally hunted in South Africa and exported to the US. He pled guilty and was sentenced to pay a fine of $30 000 (R228 000).

He spent eight days in prison there, over two months under house arrest and also had to pay $7 500 (R57 000) in damages to the American hunter.

He denied in an interview with Media24's investigative team that he was involved in rhino poaching and has been forbidden from entering Zimbabwe.

Notorious

According to the South African Aircraft register, Groenewald is linked to a closed corporation which owns a Robinson R44 helicopter with the registration ZS-HBH.

His wife, Sariette, is listed as a director of Valinor Trading 142 - the owner of the helicopter.

It is a known fact that helicopters are often used during rhino poaching operations.

Groenewald's Out of Africa Adventurous Safaris is rather notorious in hunting circles.

They advertise hunting safaris in Botswana, Tanzania, South Africa and even Zimbabwe, despite the fact that the Zimbabwean nature conservation authority (Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority) forbade them from entering the country in September 2004.

A Zimbabwean cabinet minister and well-known figure in conservation circles, David Coltart, had earlier described Out of Africa to Newsweek as a "cruel organisation which has no respect for the environment" and strives for "unreachable hunting quotas".

Hunting experts in Zimbabwe allege that Out of Africa has strong links with politicians close to President Robert Mugabe.

During the height of political instability in Zimbabwe, the organisation apparently organised hunting safaris on farms and land invaded by Zanu-PF's "war veterans".

Shock

About 100 vehicles from the police and the department of nature conservation raided game farms in the Musina area on Tuesday. A police helicopter and aircraft were also used.

Several people, including professional hunters, were questioned.

There have been no further arrests.

National police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo said on Monday the nine suspects are allegedly involved in killing rhinos, sawing off their horns and removing the carcasses.

These nine suspects will appear in court in Musina on Wednesday, the day declared International Rhino Day by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The South African Veterinary Association (Sava) expressed its shock over the arrest of Toet and Du Plessis.

It distanced itself from any "colleagues" who might be involved in rhino poaching.

Altogether 210 rhinos have been poached for their horns right across the country since January.

Dawie's bail was set today at one million Rands. No word yet on his wife's bail.

Out of Africa seems to finally be getting its just deserts. As you recall, Dawie was arrested in the US ealier this year, sentenced to some jail time, $30,000 in fines and $7500 in restitution to an American hunter for an illegal leopard.

Suspected poachers want to attend hunting fair in USA

Marietie Louw-Carstens

MUSINA. Two of the 13 members of a suspected rhino poaching syndicate apprehended in Limpopo earlier this year will spend thousands in order to attend a hunting fair in America next year.

Mr Tielman Erasmus (32) and Gys du Preez (31), both professional hunters, yesterday made an application to the Musina magistrates' court to have their bail conditions amended.

Adv. Joanie Spies, state prosecutor, said the men had applied, amongst others, to have their passports returned to them. The state did not oppose the application. An agreement was reached with the defense whereby Erasmus and Du Preez will each pay R20000 to have their passports returned to them. They will be attending more than one hunting fair in America from 10 January onwards.

Spies said that their travel plans would be studied and if the state was satisfied, their passports would be returned to them.

Upon their return from this visit to America, they would have to hand in their passports within three working days.

Erasmus and Du Preez work for Mr Dawie Groenewald (42), owner of Out of Africa Adventurous Safaris and suspected kingpin of the suspected syndicate. Erasmus and Groenewald were arrested in September after an investigation by the National Prosecuting Authority and the Department of Environmental Affairs.

Groenewald, owner of the farm Prachtig ("Beautiful") in the Musina-district, is out on bail of R1 million. His wife, Sariette (34) was released on R100000 bail.

Dr. Karel Toet (45), a well-known veterinary surgeon in Modimolle (Nylstroom), was released on bail of R50000. His wife, Marisa (35), was released on R20000 bail. The rest of the accused are Dr Manie du Plessis (34), Toet's partner, and Mr Dewald Gouws, a pilot, Nardus Rossouw, Leon van der Merwe and Paul Matoromela.

All except Matoromela were released on R20000 bail. Matoromela's bail was set at R5000.

Du Preez and Mr Joseph Maluleka (39) were arrested in October. Du Preez was released on bail of R25000 and Maluleka on bail of R80000.

All the accused appeared in court on charges of fraud, deliberate damage to property, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, contravention of the Environmental Act, organized crime, and contravention of the Medicines Act and regulated substances. All were allegedly involved in the killing of rhinos and the removal and selling of rhino horns. They must appear in the magistrates' court in Musina on 11 April.

I've have a buddy that hunted with Groenewald and his Out of Africa outfit, and was satisfied with his experience, but couldn't shake the feeling that there was something just not right with operation. As if they were not entirely on the up and and up.

Groenewald may actually be guilty of all that he is accused, but I have to point out that the news report is a hatchet job worthy of CNN.

Dawie Groenewald, 42, the wealthy driving force behind Out of Africa Adventurous Safaris in Polokwane, his wife, Sariette, 34, and Tielman Erasmus, a professional hunter, are behind bars.

What does wealthy have to do with this? He's not Donald Trump, as far as I know.

Groenewald, a former police official, was suspended from the South African Professional Hunters Association four years ago, and Zimbabwean authorities put a stop to his hunting there.

Why did Zim put a stop to his hunting? What does this have to do with the story?

According to the South African Aircraft register, Groenewald is linked to a closed corporation which owns a Robinson R44 helicopter with the registration ZS-HBH.

His wife, Sariette, is listed as a director of Valinor Trading 142 - the owner of the helicopter.

It is a known fact that helicopters are often used during rhino poaching operations.

It is also known that prostitutes sell use of their snatches for money. Does that make Mother Theresa a hooker, after all, she had a snatch (presumably)?

Groenewald's Out of Africa Adventurous Safaris is rather notorious in hunting circles.

Notorious for..........? That's an open innuendo.

Hunting experts in Zimbabwe allege that Out of Africa has strong links with politicians close to President Robert Mugabe.

Zim is a country run by a Dictator for the last 30 years. I'm sure any foreigner needs some ties to Mugabe's government to operate. That is another open innuendo. "Mugabe is bad, therefore anyone that can be remotely connected to Mugabe is bad."

I have no sympathy for Groenewald, as I don't know him, but I hate irresponsible reporting, and this is terrible.
