I am considering having a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight XTR changed to another cartridge with more power. Planned use is for northeastern whitetail deer hunting. What would be the simplest, and least expensive way to go with the present action length? Or would it make more sense to just get another gun in a more powerful cartridge? Thanks for any advice.

I believe the 257 Roberts is built on a long action so any of the 30/06 family of cartridges should work. Feed rails will be the biggest issue.

Just bump it up a notch to 7x57 ..it'll give you more fire power and a better choice of bullits..now wasn't that easy??

Sell it and buy another. Reboring will be like spending $300 in order to lower the value by $200. I wouldn't change it at all. Maybe work on my hunting skills, instead. Bruce

257 to 257 Roberts would give more than adequate cartridge performance.
7X57 7-08 308 338 Federal IF it is a long action 280 30-06 338-06 358 35 Whelen

Sell it and buy what ever you need. Many folks would love to have a Model 70 in .257 Roberts, they would make room in their safes for it.
Happy New Year folks!

You know if you rechamber a rifle from 257 Rob, unless its AI, you will never get another game animal, and while your at it you might as well get a prescription for Viagra.....

What? You don't like the 257 for deer? If you aren't going for 257 AI, then just SELL the darn thing and buy what you think you want.

I have seen a few pre-64 M70s in 257 Roberts that have been rechambered to 25-06 and 257WBY.

In my 25/06's, I shoot the 100g Tripple shock at 3450 with a Max load of R#19, Win Case, and Win primer.
Sell the rifle and buy a 25/06 if you feel the need for more power.
Of course, the 80g tripple shock and the 100g Tripple shock in your existing gun is more than adequate...it does not take much to kill critters, just good shot placement.

Winchester Model 70 Featherweight 257 Roberts would be wrong to hack up when you could sell it and buy what you want, people will pay a good price for your gun. Try Hodgdon 100 Hybrid V it will get you real close to 25-06

Them dang NE Whitetails must of started taking steroids. None I've ever seen or heard of carrys a well placed 100 grain slug from a 257 more than a few yards. Trade it to me and buy an 8 MM Rem Mag. A whitetail buck on steroids isn't going anywhere with that in his gizzard. Wayne

Sell it and buy what you want. M70's in 257 Roberts are pretty rare, even the push feeds. You'll likely come out money ahead and be happier if you sell it for a decent price and put that money towards a new rifle.

I would eventually regret selling a gun like the M70 Fwt in 257...because I have done it and regretted it!!! I hunt in the east also and the 6.5x55 or 7x57(7mm08) cartridges have served me well. I would keep it the way it is. Those XTR's are getting more scarce especially in 257. Buy a Savage, you can get other barrels for it. Good luck w/ your decision.

Having taken a lot of 8x57 barrels off, to put 257 barrels on, it seems strange to me that someone would want to get away from 257.
But you pay your money and take your choice.

Only deer that need more power than a bob to kill, are the internet deer.
